Re: Necessity of hardened crank pins on 3/4” scale

I have never worked with pre-hardened 4140 so can not comment. Although I have found annealed 4140 not the most pleasant metal to machine. Annealed 41L40 is readily available and with the lead in it machines very well. It heat treats about the same a standard 4140. LaSalle has another version of it'...

Re: Necessity of hardened crank pins on 3/4” scale

If I may, 12L14 is un-heat treatable. It is screw machine stock. The miniature nuts and bolts we buy are made from 12L14. The "L" in the designation stands for lead which acts as a chip lubricant during machining. Lead melts around 550 degree F and vaporizes around 1,100 degrees F. With red hot temp...

Re: Silver Soldering Leaf Springs

The silver solder you want is "Easyflo-45". It is available at all welding shops and you can probably find a troy ounce on Ebay. Easyflo-45 has the lowest melting temperature of all of the readily available silver solders at 1130 degrees F plus high fluidity and joint penetration. It has cadmium in ...

Re: Hydrostatic Lubricator Casting Source

I know nothing about the Hydrostatic lubricators. Does anyone have a useful schematic, which might be posted here, that may help those in the same situation as I? Is it mainly for external running gear, or can it be used on cylinder valves? Scotty Review the attached three files and you'll have a p...

Re: Hydrostatic Lubricator Casting Source

Thank you all for replying and your excellent suggestions. I had thought of machining the parts and then soldering. Although I was unaware of the availability of hollow copper spheres. The spheres eliminate the problem of creating the outer surface contour of machined parts. I can envision a four pa...

Hydrostatic Lubricator Casting Source

Can anyone suggest a possible source, lost wax or otherwise, to make casting of the hydrostatic lubricator condenser as shown in the attached sketch? I'd like the casting to be brass and to be able to polish the "bulb" portion after machining is completed. Most dimensions are negotiable if necessary...

30" 3-in-1 Metalworking Machine Base

Can anyone direct me to a supplier of good quality stands or bases, preferably with casters, for a 30" 3-in-1 sheet metalworking machine?

Thanks, Dave

Re: Draft plates

I believe I can shed some light on the draft plate also sometimes called a smoke box baffle. When an arch is fitted into a fire box the hot gases pass over the upper edge of the arch and along the upper surface of the fire box or crown sheet just as intended. However, with out the draft plate these ...

Re: Conical Boiler Casing

PS - I actually did the volume calculations for comparison between doing a tapered section and just a straight tube on a typical "wagon-top" boiler to determine how much volume would be lost. On the projects I had to hand that turned out to be a negligible percentage. This short-cut might not be ap...

Re: Conical Boiler Casing

Dave, I used this calculator for making my jacketing patterns. I then took all the numbers drew it in CAD and had templates printed Vic https://www.cmrp.com/cone-calculator Thanks for the calculator. But, it is for concentric diameters. I'm looking for a method for eccentric diameters where the out...
