Re: Necessity of hardened crank pins on 3/4” scale

Good advice. I learned this from my first mentor, the chief inspector for an aerospace tool & die works. He built his first locomotive to "plant" tolerances and it wouldn't run. As soon a one end of a part heated up and the other end of it didn't, things locked up solid. Relieving almost every slid...

Re: Side rod bushing clearance

Should fits and clearances be directly scaled down? This has actually been a big question of mine for awhile, so I’ll take the moment to slightly hijack the thread and ask in a more general sense. I have competing thoughts in my head but not a clear answer. For example, if you had a press fit on a f...

Re: Power Reverser questions

Power reverse almost always was exclusively air. Maybe they were piped for steam early on, but like steam brakes problems arise with the wet environment.

I suspect it’s possible some had some kind of steam bypass for emergencies, depending on the railroad’s practices, but I kinda doubt it.

Re: Unidentified Niagara device

I don’t have either drawing in front of me but the Niagara had both the whistle and the feedwater heater hot water line up there. You’re probably seeing the hot water line run out of the smokebox up top back to a check on at an angle near the front of the boiler.

Re: New member from Texas thinking about a K36 (or 37)

The K36 in 2.5” scale is nothing short of a monumental build. One of Tom Miller’s engines is unfathomably large and heavy. It truly weighs in at 4000lbs, and while it occupies just about the size of an RMI engine, it is drastically beefier and larger in most features, except maybe the topmost height...

Whatever happened to?

I'm trying to find some of the "gone" suppliers from this hobby. I've searched around a little and found just a little bit of info but not much. I'm curious if anybody knows the current status of, or where any of the parts/patterns are for: Hickory Ridge Klamath Loco & Machine Rogers-Cooke Superpowe...

Here is Section 1308 of the copyright law: Exclusive rights The owner of a design protected under this chapter has the exclusive right to— (1) make, have made, or import, for sale or fo...

Re: LITTLE ENGINES

Copying and distributing the drawings are clearly an infringement, and I'm not sure you guys place enough inherent value on the manufacturing information contained in your own official drawings (i.e. tolerances, fits). A CAD model doesn't contain anything of the sort. Someone might think they could ...
