Re: Compound slide feels gritty
Forgot to add, what’s the condition of your screw and nut? Do you have a thrust bearing or some form of bushing/washer arrangement on the screw too? I just made a new nut for my Yam/Cadillac compound and got new thrust ball bearings, two of them, and it made a huge difference.

Normally you’d blue the surfaces to see where your contact points are and scrape it. Plenty of videos on machine scraping to kill time.

Picked this home shop use One owner Bridgeport up a few months ago. It’s a 9x42 3/4hp single phase unit. Re: Brand new old school south Bend 10” lathe!
There’s a butt for every seat! I see someone cleaned up my statement. I had questioned my sense of sarcasm but went with it. Thanks though. I had actually found a 10k that was probably never used as evident by it not having any wear marks on its soft bed. Found it at HGR and had a heavy layer of du...

Re: Southbend 14 X 40 Gear Head Lathe
Thanks for the input. I figured I’d get the drive knocked out of the way first and then move on to cleaning it up. I’ve had too many projects that I dig in to too deeply and then get pushed aside when I get distracted. I really need to thin the stables a bit.
Thanks again Z

Re: Southbend 14 X 40 Gear Head Lathe
I got things sorted and now my speed ranges are roughly 50-300rpm and 300-1800rpm. Exactly as the system was designed with a 1725rpm motor. Anything higher or lower would need to be accomplished with a vfd and I’m not going to go that route as discussed in earlier threads. The digital tach I install...

Re: Southbend 14 X 40 Gear Head Lathe
Today, I was only able to cut about .060” per pass, when taking down some 1.5” round stock Rpm and if you were in high or low would help. I noticed that as I’m going through mine the belt was pretty well beat. I replaced it and in low I had a speed range from 40 to 100rpm +- and in high it was like ...

Re: Southbend 14 X 40 Gear Head Lathe
I’ve found this thread a wealth of knowledge in going through my lathe and have added a digital tach and gotten the oil pump working. The belt was a bit beat so I had ordered a new one according to the existing but I don’t get the specified rpm range. The belt that came equipped on the lathe is a 23...

Re: Lathe comparison
Having owned the lathes being compared I’d prefer the Heavy 10 especially if it were a cast iron base model. The problem I’ve experienced with the clausing’s is the lack in rigidity in their base and think their apron assembly is rather chinchy. Now if you had a Sheldon in the comparison I’d pick th...
