That hasn't been my experience.If you do it in the middle of a shaft it can't be disassembled. The key rides up on the radius at the end of the keyseat and jams the hub on the shaft.

How about cutting down tapers larger than MT3 on your lathe? Once the body of the drill is chucked up properly the larger MT will even allow you to set your compound to the right taper angle (unless different MT sizes have different taper angles, which I doubt).

I have three old Allis-Chalmers tractors, a Model B for which I built a front end loader and rear blade, A model CA on which I mounted a snow blower and another Model B that I am turning into an IB (lowered version of the B ( they all date back to the 1940s & 50s).

That is a R-8 style collet ,you really don't want a spindle with a Morse taper ! Tooling hard to find and sometimes really hard to remove from the spindle. The chuck end of your collet has what is called a "Jacobs" taper and is hard to remove from a chuck intentionally. Chuck or collet is...

HuanYang VFDs are pretty cheap but don't buy one unless you can decipher the setting procedures.
