Re: 476
Glad to see it again. It was great to ride behind that loco. And a funny story I've told here before but is worth telling again: Harry had the engine at an LALS meet and there was a TV news crew there doing a story about the meet. The woman reporter had done some shots riding on the train and some ...

Re: fuel topic
Coal is hard to come by here in California so it makes sense to buy a bunch of it to save on shipping. From past threads there are at least three places where people get coal from recently: 1) Penn-coal http://www.penncoal.com/blacksmith-live-steam.html https://www.chaski.org/homemachinist/viewtopi...

Re: pancakes
Operating logging steamers in the Pacific NW gave me opportunities to try boiler backhead cooking. Cooking in the oil-fired firebox was not an option. I can happily report that a 4 pound salmon foil wrapped with lemon and onion slices takes about 20 miles at slogging Mallet speeds! And the crew beh...

Re: pancakes
The trick to firebox culinary is to wait until you've reached your destination and the firebox has cooled down a bit. This is usually when the cinders have all been ejected to their new home in the smokebox or along the ROW. At this point, the crew has worked up a good appetite as well. You must co...

Re: pancakes
Thanks, but I'm more of a firebox "brats and oinions" guy myself. gotcha bruce, i would be a little skeptical myself as far as flavor from the coal fire. i mean i did have hotdogs cooked in the firebox of a steamboat once. and the boiler on the boat was wood fired. and i don't recall tast...

Re: Norfolk Western Y6B live steam First Run
hard to know how much 1309 is really being worked. from everything I've heard, it's a bit rough mechanically but who knows. I wish them the best with it, I think it's currently down with some cylinder issues. But if you had it on 50 hoppers, likely louder than how it's run on WMSR. kinda like UP wi...
