Re: Another 2900 project...

Bracket for the small air tank on the engineers side. This one took a bit of thought and a lot of effort. A couple of small "oops" moments but they will be predominantly covered up by the tank. Overall I was really pleased with how this one turned out.

Re: 1.6" Scale Challenger project for sale

The pictures definitely do not do justice to Ed's skill as a fabricator and locomotive builder. The trailing truck is a work of art and is mostly completed. The lead truck is pretty much completed as well. The stainless steel side rods and main rod are finished as well as the spring rigging. The cyl...

Journal Boxes for sale

Greetings fellow live steam enthusiasts and builders: We have sixteen journal boxes for sale. That’s right, sixteen. These came from a set of buckeye tender truck castings purchased years ago. The pieces are cast from aluminum and have been partially machined. The machined surfaces are flat but the ...

Re: UP FEF 4-8-4 in Ogden Pictures

That device is the hot water pump. Feedwater from the tender gets pumped into the smokebox and heated past the boiling point. (Can't recall the name of the type of heater on 844). It then gets rammed (pumped) into the boiler via the hot water pump. The pump has to overcome the boiler pressure and th...

Re: Another 2900 project...

Many years ago, I naively thought working on and machining models and small parts would be much easier than larger parts. Was that thought ever wrong. Looking at the selected work some of the fantastic machinists complete on this forum gives hope. Just keep putting one foot in front of the other. Or...

Re: Sheet steel tender tank sealant

SF2900, The GacoFLex LM60 appears to be more for wood and concrete. Have you actually used it in a tender? I helped coat a tender with it and it worked pretty well. The next time I try it I will thin the material down a bit as we used the vertical grade and it ended up being fairly thick and gloppy...

Re: Sheet steel tender tank sealant

Might want to consider GacoFLex LM60. It is also a 2-part urethane product that looks to be similar to the Devcon material. LM60 is designed to coat/waterproof tanks and structures and comes in a horizontal and vertical viscosities. https://gaco.com/product/gacoflex-lm60/

Re: Investment Casting Costs

I used Valley Brass and Bronze a few years ago to cast parts for 1.6" scale Westinghouse compressors. Not sure if anything has changed since, but he did say that the double barrel cylinder casting on the compressor was about the biggest thing that he could cast as it just barely fit his flasks....
