Re: More Farm Boy pics

Thanks for the posting of the photos. You gave me food for thought... I've just started machining my farm boy in the last week (SN 408). The first flywheel is chucked up on my lathe as we speak. It's being made from 303 (free machining) SS (close mass properties - about 11% heavier than class 40 CI)...

Re: How to create 0.250" hole in 1/4" thick bronze

I've had good luck drilling yellow metals with normal drill bits that have been dubbed. This article describes the process:

Re: Silver solder ban

After reading your post, I tried to buy some to have in stock for perpetuity. Alas, read here. The cadmium bearing solder has been discontinued by the manufacturer...

Re: pecular cut

It's a Moire' pattern. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moir%C3%A9_pattern Congratulations, your mill is perfectly trammed! You can, however, minimize it with a sharp cutter with a slight radius, proper feed/speed, etc. This cutter was ground for me by a professional machinist. It's phenomenal... fly%20...

Re: Wide band radio ban

CB, FRS and GRMS are exempt it seems... http://www.commlawblog.com/2011/07/articles/deadlines/reminder-narrowband-transition-deadline-approaching/ Nonetheless, I just never can understand why the FCC is so anal about use of the spectrum. From 30 Mhz on up, it's mostly empty per my wideband receiver....

Re: New PM-45M stood up and running!

As a fellow PM45 owner I can tell you those quill handles get in the way of everything. I ordered a set of 12mm thread ball handles from MSC which help immensely.

Good luck with your new machine! Looks like you opted for the power down feed option.

Re: Ordered new mill

After EdK posted the link to Penn Tool I kicked myself. For that price and what you get I can make room for that mill. So I cancelled the enco order and ordered the mill in the link from EdK. Thank you EDK for saving me. Here is a picture of the mill I will be recieving: A knee mill for about $2000...

Re: Got tired of my chineese milling

You didn't say what Chinese mill you had? There are Chinese mills and then there are "real" Chinese mills. If you try to take a big cut out of steel on any mill not designed for it the head is going to flex and you are going to have chatter. Just saying. I second that question. What Chine...

Re: Show us your lathe!

Here's my lathe: a 12 x 36 Atlas/Craftsman. It came with pretty much all you see in the picture plus about 200 lbs of brass, aluminum and steel stock. All for $175 including the lathe, stand, two Cushman chucks (3 and 4 jaw), endless HSS cutter blanks, some carbide tools, dead and live centers, cent...

I hear ya. Washing the dog also seems to do the trick. Dog shampoo is one heck of a degreaser!

Re: How to Remove Metal Blueing Die From Hands!

I'm in the same position. Nonetheless, those customers who know me are used to dealing with a guy with hands like steam fitter. As for getting the blue off, believe it or not, Clorox. Even gets out the junk from under your fingernails! The other way I get my hands squeaky clean is hot soapy water in...
