You might check this old thread and see if any of the information is still available.

Re: WEIGHTING A LOCOMOTIVE PART 2

When a locomotive with rockers enters a curve the rockers lift weight off the locomotive drivers due to the fact that generally the leaf springs on the lead and trailing trucks are built to scale and are too stiff to compress. I have seen the drivers on my 4-8-4 stop turning when traversing a track ...

More prototype photographs

Ran across another site with steam and early diesel locomotive photographs. Here is the J. Parker Lamb collection. Mostly East coast, Illinois and Upper Midwest and Southeast railroads represented.

Re: Building a locomotive from erection drawings

Everyone has provided good information in this thread. After talking with Don Yungling and seeing his SP GS1 in person, I got new religion and decided to go the fabricated assembly route. It's just so liberating. Use castings if they are available but if their not then just "build it"! $.02 Ken- He...

Re: Building a locomotive from erection drawings

not to open Pandora's box, but please do not believe for a minute that a CNC anything is required to build a steam locomotive. Nice to have - absolutely...but required? Nah.... MANY a locomotive has been built with a lathe, drill press, milling attachment for lathe (small loco) and / or a manual mi...

Re: Building a locomotive from erection drawings

Hello James, Having traveled the road you are contemplating here are a couple of my thoughts. The erection drawings leave out a lot of details, especially piping and appliances. You will find that locomotives built for other railroads, and/or different classes on the same railroad, used the same or ...

Re: Drill sharpener attachment help

Hello Reggie, Thanks for the link. Downloaded and studied the manual. The Kalamazoo unit is a bit different than the attachment on the Elite. I had been at that site before, vintage machinery, and found some useful info about the grinder, except for setting the drill grinder unit. I performed anothe...

Re: Drill sharpener attachment help

Pennsy fan, thanks for the link to the Darex manual. Good to know I have been using the unit correctly as per the manufacturer. I am still hoping for definitive information to the attachment in the first thread. That unit has me stumped. Surely there is a setting that puts the drill bit in the corre...

Re: Drill sharpener attachment help

Wes, Thanks for your input. I have watched that video, as well as many others of his, and it is very helpful. Especially for getting destroyed bits back close to the correct geometry. I have the Darex setup that my dad sent along with the grinder and it will hold up to 3/4" drills. See attached phot...

Drill sharpener attachment help

A while back I put this on the hobby machinist forum with no one there having the needed info so here goes. I inherited an Elite tool and cutter grinder from my dad when he decided he needs the room for other items. There is an instruction manual but some details are vague at best. I have uploaded 5...
