Water pump eccentric fastenening

Hi all, Looking for other's experience here. I am working on a RR Supply/Warehouse Heavy Mikado. Prints say to silver solder the water pump eccentrics to the axle. Well - before I finished the axle, I should have seen this. Heating up all that metal concerns me that I may warp the axle. Since it is ...

Re: crankpin size of material selection

Hi all,

Thanks for all the great info. I am going to go down the 1144 road. Have ordered ground stock from speedy metals.

Thanks again,

crankpin size of material selection

What do you use for size of stock for crankpins? Given that a pin is .750 +0 -.001 on print. It has been suggested to me that the mill finish on 1018 crs is good enough for use in a bronze, oilite, or fiberglide bearing. In my mind a little polish with 400 grit emery would yield a better bearing sur...

Re: Cole or Hodges trailing truck

The Southern PS-4 Hodges is a different style than the CB&Q O1a. Charlie and I talked a bit about his trailing truck a year or so ago. I am looking for a Hodges as shown in the attached.

Re: Cole or Hodges trailing truck

That's not what I am looking for. I guess I will draw up the Q Hodges shown in the third post and see about getting some castings done.

Re: Cole or Hodges trailing truck

Hi all, Resurrecting his thread. Is the Hodges that Rich and Tim are interested in the one used on the Southern PS4? Or is it the style in the photo above of the CB&Q O1a Mikado? Just asking as I have some time on my hands and thought I might drqw up the one I need for the CB&Q Mikado. But if the wo...

Equalizer fulcrums machined and bolted on to the two sets of frames. I also have the pedestal binders done and in place.

Re: Equalizer Fulcrum Machining Help

Here's my solution and setup. I purchased some R8 end mill holders. For the deeper pocket, I made an extension and reamed the hole for the end mill. I used a 2 flute carbide end mill, running at around what mild CRS speed would be with flood cooling. For the shallow pocket I used a reduced shank car...

Newbie Furnace build

Hi all, I searched around the site and did not find info on the making a furnace capable of melting aluminum, bronze and iron. But then I didn't go through all 532 pages of hits either. I am aware of the Gingery books and am about to buy them. I do see a lot of different furnaces out there using a G...

Re: Equalizer Fulcrum Machining Help

Hi Karl,

Offering your fixturing is very kind. I think I will take you up on it. But it looks like I still need to use a 5" long end mill. Do you remember if you used 2 or 4 flute, HSS or Carbide. I will send you a P.M.

Thanks,

Dale
