Re: Engine Cleaner (exterior)

I use the foam engine cleaner from Gunk, but there are multiple kinds and I use the weakest. I spray it on, let it wait, and hose it off. Re: Quieting noisy gears

STP Oil Treatment sticks to the gears. I had a friend that used it as lube on a large shay he had.

Re: From the ground up

Buy an engine to operate at the local club while you build your engine. You will need time off from the project, and what better way than to go and operate an engine and fellowship with the fellow live steamers.

Re: Coal dust bricks again

I don't have a big enough press at this time, but has anyone taken some coal dust and put it in a piece of pipe on a 100 ton press and pressed it into a brick? I know that they press brick pavers here in my area that way and they are a dry mixture when pressed together. I toured the plant and though...

Re: Coal dust bricks again

Out of curiosity though do coal dust bricks hold some shape as they burn or do they break up? Right now I am working off some soft coal I don’t much like, because it doesn’t break up in the fire and is more difficult to use. I’m having to smash it into pieces before it goes into the firedoor. I'll ...

Re: grey iron

Fred,
I had a friend that had the same problem with a pile of castings and he fired up his wife's pottery kiln and left them in there for a period of time and then brought them down slowly with the timer and they were able to be machined. This was an electric system that could be controlled well.
