Re: Sharps update

P1030018.JPG Jackf, the lapping only gets rid of the sharp edges and smooths things out, not much meatal is removed. Still trying to get it shooting to the sights, at 50m it`s still a bit low so will keep cutting down the front sight till its on. Showing good grouping at 50m with 50gr 3f and with a...

Re: Sharps update

You can see I've made a booboo here, but I was looking at my Sharps up date and thought I would put a new post about my .50 barrel build but forgot to get of this one. Anyway the back sight was fitted, it was a two leaf flip up sight I had in my bits box, save me making one, so when I was on my hunt...

Re: Sharps update

P1020983.JPG Now hang on, don`t jump the gun, as you can see it`s got no sights on yet and it`s still round. So set it up in the lathe to shave the barrel octagonal and being 1" stock, the same as my .45 barrel, when it was finished it fitted in the stock nicely . Now next job was milling and fitti...

Re: Sharps update

Hi all, with my new drilling and rifling set up I thought a .50" cal swap barrel for my Hawken .45 would be the go. Now I could cut rifle with a twist of 1-18" to 1-70" and Right hand, From Ebay I got a .50" gundrill so away I went, drilled hole came out, .501" to .499". A good lapping to smooth and...

Re: Sharps update

As I have all my gun drilling bits I`m drilling and rifling a few blank .45 cal muzzle loading barrels and will cut rifle them with a 1-48 twist as I have changed to a sine bar on my lathe and can now get a twist from 1-18" to 1-70", and will put them on our trade me to see if someone wants to make ...

Sharps update

Hi All, just to let you know all's going good with my home made Sharps rifle, a lot of lead has gone down the barrel now and just had to make the front sight a bit higher as it was shooting 2/3". It`s now spot on at 50m 8 shots in a 60mm wide group. Pic`s, sorry no go with IMG OR URL ?. Homebrew.357.

Trying steam

Hi guys, thought I would have go at making a small mill steam engine, but I don`t know much about it. Have Tubal Cain`s book 2 and Stan Brays one on small steam osculating engines but looking at one a bit bigger. So here`s what I`m trying to do, using a brake cylinder as the steam cylinder with stee...

Re: Indiana huning rule change

Gees, what`s wrong with the good old 3006, 7x57, 270, and ones stuffed if you can't use the old 45-70 Sharps. In the N Z bush only .22 rimfire and shotgun are banned, mainly to stop bird shooting. O M G, no muzzle loaders!!!, that's stuffed it, I`m not coming a hunting over there. Homebrew.357.

Re: Gatling Gun

Hell, !!, you can't give up yet , old Custer is waiting for it. Hmmmm, I can do 45-70 barrels, mite take me a few years for eight, but just think of it when I turn up at the annual black powder cannon shoot with it, while there`s bullets in the air there`s hope. Homebrew.357.

Re: Makeing a double paper patch mould

Hi Steaming 10, for the Sharps barrel I lapped it with a bore cast lead lap, 600grt first then 1.200grt past. I make up the lapping past by burning a bit of emery paper, you just have the grit left, mix with a bit of oil it`s good to go. And using p/p bullets helps polish it as well, so a few 100 mo...
