Re: Ulin Locmotive k-27

22 sq ft in BC (2m2, legally). Ontario has some weird HP/surface area calculation, in addition to the 10 ft limit. the big traction ran afoul of it- even though the boiler was built in MCCR days (before TSSA was a thing, and the hobby side rules were a bit different). Basically, my understanding was...

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England

I would think (har) that the best would be to get it all together oversize, then heat treat it (normalize) it, then finish machine it.

Thoughts from the rest ?

Re: Ulin Locmotive k-27

Glenn Grasley and I have built four 2.5" scale K-27 boilers. The Ulin drawing is pretty much useless. I have copies of the D&RGW drawings and scaled the boilers from those drawings. Hey there! Well, I Managed to find the drawings…. And yes the boiler drawing is what I would also consider u...

Assuming we're allowing the 80's to be considered "old"... https://live.staticflickr.com/7534/16346439982_89968536dc_k.jpg Rex Smith Atlantic 1 Older than the 80's, this is Rex Smith's Atlantic, which I understand lived in Port Rowan, Ontario. (on Lake Erie). It probably ran at Sun Parlour...

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England

My yard is much the same way and has me thinking of building a steam tractor as well. I would love a 1/3 or 1/2 size Case but seems like castings and plans are few and far between. I believe there are 3", 4" and 6" Case casting sets out there. The other "big" forum for stea...

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England

Oh, and on Torque- oh, we have it in copious quantities. Not so much HP, but torque... I've done wheelies with the 4", in that it will quite happily rotate around the rear axle even if my slightly lardy bum is NOT sitting on the tender :). (so something like 800 ft lb of torque on the rear axle...

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England

If my dad sees this, he might comment on the 2" roller. I know it has a completely home made gear. Done with drilled bottoms and file. I believe the gears on the 4" Fowler are cast, then machined. "real" fowlers were just cast...not machined. In relation to current applications, ...

Re: Boiler insulation

Other options are cork, or softwood.
I'd avoid even the idea of Asbestos like the plague that it it is...even if you have some NOS from the 70's. The Ceramic materials are likely not much better for your lungs, be respectful of them, but they do not have quite the same - providence.

Re: Building a 4.5 in scale Foden Steam Truck in New England

Over on Traction-Talk, there is a beautiful 4" being built in WA state- https://www.tractiontalkforum.com//showthread.php?t=45771 Mark up here in Victoria (BC) has a Foden, I'm yet to have a play with it, though he came over and ran the big Fowler around. That's pre-covid, so 5 years ago at lea...

Re: How do plug leaks in smoke box?

Basically, any furnace cement. Dad used to use asbestos packing, then cover with said cement. Makes getting it off "easier", as the cement will break off the soft packing as you unroll said soft packing. Any of the furnace/muffler cements are generally available at hardware stores... For l...

Re: 3/4" Caribou castings

They make a nice, very powerful for the weight loco that has a supprising turn of speed for a 0-8-0 ! (think 8-9 mph on 3.5" gauge...)

(mine is sitting on the work bench here at work, waiting for me to getaroundtuit for the injector pipework...again)
