Re: Coffin Feedwater Heater

Jack you could try the group that is restoring Boston & Maine 3713. They just did a lot of work on its Coffin Pump and I think they have the info.

Re: THE HARDINGE CHUCKER A FABULOUS MACHINE

That sounds neat Dave! I have not yet operated a Hardinge but have really liked turret lathes. Setup is not difficult and you can crank out the parts. Plus I understand a mechanical machine, I don’t do well with computers.

Re: Stainless steel boiler/exchanger?

It’s a lot easier and more effective to set up a good water treatment program at each club. Especially as many use one water source for the whole track. Depending on the initial water conditions we could set up softeners and test the water regularly. We could even install off the shelf filters to re...

Re: Boiler stays and heat expansion

No full size boiler had 2” plates. The Big Boy’s firebox sheets were probably 1/2”-5/8” thick. The barrel may be as thick as 1.25”. They ran at 300psi and would have been hydro tested at 375psi. Our scale boilers are quite out of scale in these ways.

Re: Boiler water injection efficiency

I would think that the steam driven water pumps (scale ones without a heater) would be the least efficient because the live steam used is exhausted to atmosphere. Injectors return most of that heat to the boiler.

Re: Hydro Testing

I heard a staybolt break on a full size locomotive once. Not during a hydro but fired up and not at full pressure. The telltale hole started weeping right away. It's not a sound that you forget!

Re: Ball valves

Has anyone out there built a scale dome throttle? I know it's much more work than a ball/gate valve in the smoke box but it should work very well.

Re: A few questions about what Metals to use for what

I would think it would be best to use metals that are easier to machine if possible. Scale engines don't have very high mechanical loads compared to a full size engine so strength isn't as critical. 4140 is a little hard but still nice to work with. Full size engines use it for piston rods, crankpin...

Re: Another Superheater/Steam Dryer Question

Adding superheaters will not result in any increase in tractive effort so there can't be any pressure increase. It will dry out the steam and increase efficiency quite a bit depending on how much temperature rise we can get.
