HF5980 3 in 1 machine Tailstock Dial Indicator question

Hi, all The calibrated dial indicator on my HF5980 tail stock does not move to re-set to zero. The other dial indicators move so I can set then to zero when I need to. I took it apart and it has a slot and key and is intentionally fixed. I'm wondering why? I can see that you can manually slide the t...

Hi, Torch

Yes, that's a GOOD idea! That would be faster.

Thanks!!

Gib tightening on HF5980 3 in 1 machine

Hi, all I've been having fun learning about my HF5980. This may be obvious to everyone but, just in case someone is as slow as I am, I thought I should post this. I couldn't find anything in the manuals about adjusting the gibs so I took the carriage off the bed and noticed that the set screws did n...

Re: HSS cutoff tool with aluminum bogging motor

Hi, Torch

The box for the lathe bit set says the bits are "tungsten carbide tips."

Hi, Harold

Thanks. I found the following Youtube video (part 1 of 3) on parting on the lathe. There are several machining videos by this person and I thought it was helpful:

Re: HSS cutoff tool with aluminum bogging motor

Hi, Torch

Ok, thanks for all the info.

Clear as mud is about right...

I'll just use the thicker, stockier, tapered, shorter HF cut off tool that is working and wait to use the skinny one until I get a LOT more experience. Here's a picture of the one that is working for me:

Re: HSS cutoff tool with aluminum bogging motor

Hi, again I just wanted to correct a thought I had earlier... I don't think it would be necessary to mill down the entire length of the parting blade. You would only need to mill down enough to get it to cut as deep as you plan to go into the part. Since I'm currently working on a 0.900" alumin...

Re: HSS cutoff tool with aluminum bogging motor

Hi, Thanks again for the help!! Wow, that's a lot of info... I'm trying to digest it all. For now, here's the part that I can grab onto at the moment: "The widest part of the tool MUST be the cutting edge. If that is not the case, the kerf created won't accommodate the body of the tool in use. ...

Re: HSS cutoff tool with aluminum bogging motor

Hi, Harold and Torch Thanks for the replies and the great photos. I can see Torch's holder is way more complicated than I was thinking. It seems very nice. Also, I'm not sure but the blade end looks different... Torch's looks tapered to me. My end is just square. I did NOTHING to it. I just took it ...

Re: HSS cutoff tool with aluminum bogging motor

Hi, Thanks so much for the help! Of everything you said, I think I had checked all of it except the back rake. I am using a thin parting tool. I made the blade holder myself. The blade is very rigid in the tool holder and I carefully squared it up to the part. But, the parting tool is simply horizon...

HSS cutoff tool with aluminum bogging motor

12-5-11 Hi, I'm new to machining. I'm trying to part off a 0.900" aluminum rod on the lathe of my HF5980 "3 in 1 tool." I've got a new HSS parting tool (straight out of the box) set to cut at the midway point of the rod, sticking out about 1/2", I'm cutting near the chuck and the...

HF 5980 Graduated Collars conversion confusion

12-2-11 Hi, all I recently got a Harbor Freight 5980 "3 in 1" machine. I may be weird, but I found the markings on the 5 graduated collars confusing. After some measuring with a digital caliper, I decided the graduations on the various collars are in millimeters. Since I don't think in met...

Re: HF 5980 3 in 1 Mill Chuck Stuck

MacD

Thanks for the great ideas. I have a tie rod pickle. I'll check it out. Also, that's a great tip to keep the draw bar threaded a bit so the chuck can't drop out.

Thanks again to all!
