Re: Rail Bender

Fwiw, here's the one I built, it helped a lot to have both the fixed rollers "under power", hence the chain drive. I probably should have spread the fixed rollers apart a bit more, but it worked well. I mounted it on an old grinder stand I had. Well, I guess these pics don't show the drive...

Re: Basket case 2-4-0

Turns out the steam dome was the same thickness as the main boiler. It was still crap, and the new one will be a serious upgrade.

Re: Basket case 2-4-0

Three and a half years. About time I made some progress on this thing. I posted in the live steam section on the steam dome height, finally decided to make the new one the same height as the old one. First pic is a head on view of the boiler, you can see how carefully constructed this thing was. Yea...

Re: Steam dome height???

Thanks for the input, I decided to bite the bullet and cut away. I made it the same height as the old one, I'm going to post some pics on the build thread.

Re: Steam dome height???

Thanks, Charles. To my mind it's one of those "law of diminishing returns " things. If it's too short, you can't fit the throttle, and you won't have much volume for steam. Too tall and you risk cooling the steam off too much. So, in between is a happy medium somewhere.

Steam dome height???

In an effort to make some progress on my basket case 2-4-0, I bought a foot of 4" schedule 80 pipe to replace the steam dome on the boiler. The original dome is questionable at best, the person who owned the project before me did a hydro test on the boiler, and somehow it held. When I opened up...

Lookee what I got in the mail today!

I got an unexpected delivery today, and I thought I would share! A little background, earlier this year I purchased a lost wax casting setup, and the person who sold it to me threw in a bunch of patterns as well. They had more somewhere in the shop, but couldn't put their hands on them the day I pic...

Re: ODF AAR Class B truck kit list

It's been too long, I have finally restarted casting parts for the Alco truck kits. The stars have finally aligned, and I have completed refurbishing enough equipment that it should go pretty smoothly from this point. For everyone who has been patiently waiting, I sincerely appreciate it and apologi...

Yup, much more leveling, and about twenty more yards of ballast! I'm glad you finished the loop, and it is rideable! Cool video, too!

Re: ODF AAR Class B truck kit list

Hello everyone! I wanted to post an update on this project, as per usual it's taking longer than I expected. And, I now get to add another delay. https://youtu.be/4d6czE5ClQY As I said in the video, I am starting a new job, and there's some extensive training for it, so shop time for the next couple...

Re: Derailments

A bit of a recent perspective on the whole hiring thing, I've seen it in two completely different companies. I am currently in the process of changing careers, after 18 years at my former job. I was the lowest form of management, so I really didn't have a say in the hiring process. However, I know f...
