Re: Oxyweld Torch

I think you'll have a problem getting 35% hydrogen peroxide. The usual generally available stuff is 3%

Re: Two speed motor question

I think there is probably a wiring error in the connections to the motor or switch. Hunt around for a wiring connection diagram possibly glued to the inside of the switch cover or motor cove . It's also possible you have a defective starting capacitor on the motor.

Re: On engineers and engineering

Steve H Graham: I doubt that the boats you talk about were designed by engineers, more likey marketing people. As for your panning robertson screws I totaly disagree and I have used them for many years in my 28' sailboat. About the only statement regarding them that is right is that you have to use ...

Re: stub arbor vs. slitting saw arbor

The first stub arbour I made had the saw cutting on only a couple of teeth but after that I learned that 3 jaw chucks are not perfect. Since then my stub arbours have worked reasonably--not perfect but well

Re: Bismuth

Well--I finally got the specs and made the bismuth slug. It was all an anticlimax which is just as well for most projects. The bismuth melted easily with no fumes or unpleasant smells. I cast a cylinder about 2 cm by 5 cm then cleaned up the end and parted off about a cm sample. It's a little strang...

Re: Bismuth

We've measured paramagnetic force and diamagnetic force for a number of materials (brass and copper plus other gemstones) using a setup which she produced based on a gemmological scale which goes up to 20 grams and various neodymium magnets which she has. I'll try to keep you up to date as new thing...

Re: Bismuth

Thanks Refinery Mike; The stuff I have is a handfull of scrap crystals left over from a crystal growing operation. They are mirror surfaced hopper face crystals with a beautiful yellow to blue surface--they would probably oxidize further if I gave them time. The project of the moment is to make a fe...

Bismuth

Does any one have any experience machining bismuth? I have a simple little turning job to do on a slug of bismuth but before starting I would like to know if there are any traps or other gotchas.

Re: Tutorial/how to on VFD's?

I also have looked around at ads for VFD's and I have concluded that to quite an extent they work on the BS baffles brains principle. But since I am an electrical engineer with a lot of experience on DC variable speed drives plus some on VFD's I think I can offer a few worthwhile comments which may ...

Re: Lead Screw Repair

I have a 6-18 Atlas so I just had a look at it. The lead screw is used only for threading and auto feed; it uses a rack and pinion for manual feed. I may be overly brave but I would look closely at turning the feed screw end for end. You would lose a few inches of threading at the tailstock end but ...
