I think there is probably a wiring error in the connections to the motor or switch. Hunt around for a wiring connection diagram possibly glued to the inside of the switch cover or motor cove . It's also possible you have a defective starting capacitor on the motor.

Does any one have any experience machining bismuth? I have a simple little turning job to do on a slug of bismuth but before starting I would like to know if there are any traps or other gotchas.
