Re: Allen Ten-Wheeler blueprints

I feel your pain :) I actually ordered a couple of groups of castings the week the company was sold...DOH! ended up going with RRSC as my time in the shop is very limited in the summer and I wanted to get to machining. All is well though, from what I read the new owners hope to be up and running in ...

Re: Axle/journal box help.

Oh, one more quick question Cbrew. When you find the center of the of the axle box are you using the outside of the axle box (square portion) or are you finding the
center of the rough bore in the casting?

Thanks again,
Matt

Axle/journal box help.

Hey folks, Work has been progressing on my RRSC loco. I am getting to the point of needing the machine the Journal/axle boxes. Now for the dumb question...How do you folks go about centering these parts in a 4 jaw chuck. The casting is rough to say the least so I am having trouble using the usual in...

Re: A boring question..

Once again, thanks for the input. I hope some I reach a point where I can help folks out the way you guys have helped me. I received the plans and casting for group 1 & 2. Left and right side cylinders are indeed one piece. I don't really see how I could bore it on my little lathe, which leaves ...

Re: A boring question..

So I was pondering this a little more and a crazy idea popped in my head. I have seen folks use the tilt head of the G0704 mill as a lathe. Assuming I could tram it in the horizontal position, would this be a horrible idea?

Thanks,
Matt

Re: A boring question..

Thanks again folks for all the input. I do have a mill but it is a small one, similar to the G0704 just different brand. I was under the impression that the lathe would be the better choice of the two since I can use the power feed on the lathe, which I would think would leave a better finish. Then ...

Ah ha, Greg, I remember stumbling across that link while I was researching this and couldn't remember where I saw it. Like a ding dong I didn't bookmark it. Problem solved, thanks Greg.

Re: A boring question..

This board is great!

Steve, that is exactly what I was looking for!! I am not sure how large the castings are either but I think they will fit fine.

Thanks again,
Matt
