Re: 4140 vs 1018 for my application

Just curious, what size setscrew do you use and what diameter rod is the shackle made out of? Im trying to get a good idea of how hard it would be to pry these simulated locks open.

Re: 4140 vs 1018 for my application

I could see if your competitors' product used 4140 prehard that it would last longer but not if he just used annealed 4140. Since the padlock body is subjected to the firefighters prying against them with picks, i could see where that part would get dinged and mashed/deformed with use but any unhard...

Re: Types of Lathes?

I always thought toolroom lathes were different from bench and engine lathes by their precision and rigidity. This is an excerpt from the write up on Monarch 10EE lathes from lathes.uk website: "A basic test for a genuine toolroom lathe is that the width of the bed should be at least equal to, ...

Re: DuMont 3R ratcheting arbor press

Re: DuMont 3R ratcheting arbor press

The press is in Franklin, Virginia. I thought a friend and myself could man-handle the press on a trailor or truck bed but if it weighs that much, I don't think that's an option  Might have to pay for the riggers this time....

DuMont 3R ratcheting arbor press

Hello, Does anyone on this forum own a DuMont 3R ratcheting arbor press? I bought one on an online auction for $160 but I have to drive 4 hrs one way to pick it up and don't want to pull a trailor if I don't have too. Does anybody that owns one of these presses have an idea of how much it weighs and...

Re: Heat treating collets

Glenn, what is the step by step machining process that you were planning to use to achieve your result with the collets? Im not sure what your new grinder is capable of but there are a few ways to do it IMO to make it easy to finish grind after heat treat. 4140 is a good, tough heat treatable steel ...

Re: Small valve runout

Thanks for all the replies. I do have one of those suction cup-on-a-stick tools and grinding and lapping compound. The problem is still that my valve is either bent, ground with too much runout, or the seat is not concentric with the valve stem guide because im not even to the point of lapping due t...

Re: Small valve runout

Thanks Tom for all the information. Ive never been impressed with how the collet on the craftsman grinder worked. It closes at the front and back as its compressed length wise. It grips a wide range (1/4"-1/2") but its not nearly as accurate as i would assume a valve face would need to be....

Small valve runout

Hello everyone and merry christmas. This question may be in the wrong section but here it is: Im building a small IC engine (around 40cc) and Im having problems with my valves sealing. I have access to an older craftsman valve grinding machine to true the sealing surface up but you have to fiddle wi...

Re: Good Mill Vise

You know, its funny how a task such as choosing a mill vice can consume so much time and effort. I spent more time researching what vice to buy, in the two weeks it took me to make a decision, than i made chips two times over. Granted i didnt want to use the mill as much without a new and improved v...

Re: Good Mill Vise

Thanks housedad for that information. I had no idea Kurt had a scratch-n-dent section on their website. Then again, I haven't spent too much time on their website due to the prices  After starting this thread and listening to everyone's opinion, I decided to purchase the 440V milling vice fro...
