Re: Little Engines American Boiler

Charlie got himself a shirt made that actually says something like: "Don't tell my wife what I paid for this" or "don't let my wife sell these things for what she thinks I paid for them", something like that. Pretty funny stuff.

Re: 12VCompressor for a Brake Car

Charlie: I have an old air pump out of an old Caddy or some type of luxury air-ride car. It is 12 volts. You can try it out if you want to see if it will do the job, if it works you can have it. I know that it actually works, and it's not as loud as many of the pumps out there. Probably not as fast,...

Re: Temporary Trailer-Engine haul

If this is a 1 1/2" Scale locomotive, I'd suggest that you get a 16' trailer instead of a 14' trailer. A typical steam era freight car in 1 1/2" scale is 4 1/2 to 5 feet long. With a 16 foot trailer you can usually get 3 cars end-to-end in one row of the trailer without having to do stuff like take ...

Re: Vincent Astor's railroad

I'm interested, but since all this happened before I was born and I have no second-hand knowledge about it either, I don't have anything to contribute to your search. I love historical stuff though, especially the early history of our hobby. I have the reprint of the wandering locomotive books that ...

Re: types of coal

You can definitely smother a fire and make it produce more smoke, but there are some types of coal with a lot more volatiles, sulfur, ash, dirt, clay, etc... all in there. Thus some coals will produce a lot more smoke than other types no matter how you fire them. I used to use the Alabama coal from ...

Re: types of coal

Soft Coal= Bituminous Coal Hard Coal= Anthracite Welsh coal comes from the Welsh mines in England. Pocahontas coal comes from the Pocahontas coal fields in West Virginia. Nut coal refers to the size of the coal lumps, as does stoker coal, pea coal, rice coal, Buckwheat coal, egg coal, slack, mine ru...

Re: From the ground up

I always thought it would be ideal (maybe not realistic) to have THREE different locomotives available for you to choose from! (1) I would have a small locomotive that was very portable/easy to handle and fire. Something that I can carry easily in the bed of my truck or in the back of my SUV, along ...

Re: From the ground up

I will seriously consider it, but no promises, because as my wife would tell you I can be very pig headed. I think the main point would be for me to find a train that is smaller but also appeals to me both visually and mechanically. Maybe you should think of your first locomotive as a training tool...

Re: From the ground up

Echoing what Bill said earlier... I think you should NOT build a UP Big Boy as your first locomotive. That's like saying you're going to build a space-shuttle as your first experimental flying air plane, or completely fabricate a 1/4 scale small block Chevrolet engine for your kid's go-kart. Do your...

Re: I'm just an operator

I think that a lot of people who are 'operators' actually call themselves machinists, and that may be where the disagreement is. For example, the person in the factory or job shop who puts a piece of material in a CNC mill, indicates it, bolts it down, Calls down the program, and then hits to go but...
