That is my understand also, Dick. New had to be amortized off over a number of years, but a rebuild could be written off the first year.

Re: Southern Railways Ps-4 construction info
John, The SP A6 and P4 classes were rebuilt at the same time and have a large commonality of parts. The cylinder pattern and valve gear support castings are the same between both locos, as are the frame spreaders. The boilers are of the same diameter, the P4 of course being longer, but both have the...

Re: Logging Disconnects
I think you will find Disconnects were outlawed fairly early on. I think there is something in "Logging Railroads of the West" (Superior), about them not being legal for very long. They didn't allow for air brakes... Disconnected trucks were used almost into the 60"s (Dec. 31 59 in o...

Re: Making ZA27
I've been making some pot metal castings and began to run low on metal, so I added a zinc ingot and some thin aluminum trimmings to the pot, melted it and continued to pour with good results. When I ran low again I did the same thing, but threw in a piece of 50/50 lead tin solder this time...that c...

Re: Second Reconstruction of the Mongrel 2-6-0 "Emma"
Dutch made his own driver pattern and had them cast locally. Iirc, they were a whopping $25 a piece. He went with a 57" driver both since the UP Consols had 57, and that he wanted more chugs per revolution. The middle driver was blind to get around his 25' radius.

Steve Kuhn, I have never gotten an overnight package on time from UPS, and have had other issues with them as well. FedEx has never missed an overnight package! SteveM, I end up putting a cut down box inside the flat rate box and using a box stapler to staple the two together. I agree that the flat ...

For a little perspective, here are some examples of tube lengths: SP class A6 4-4-2 16 feet SP Harriman 4-6-2 (classes P1 through P7) 20 feet SP Cab forward classes AC4 through 12 22 feet Keep in mind that the AC4 - 12 had combustion chambers. The Atlantics had a 75" smokebox, and the Pacific c...

I wouldn't bother removing the key in the spindle. With the size of your machine, it is highly unlikely you will ever shear the key. Your machine does not have the rigidity to ever get close to a situation to where the key will shear. In my 40+ years of machining in various shops, I was only in one ...

Re: Machining a bell for better tone
Glenn, I suspect that your bells lack of "carry" or ring is probably due more to the casting than the shape. If the bell was not fed properly in the casting process, you will have a dull thud rather than the bell ringing. The material could also have an effect also. I have seen cast unmach...
