Re: Easy to turn but hard to mill
I'd put the piece in my wood stove - get it good and hot and allow the stove to cool overnight. Then try it on the mill. I used to buy scrapyard shafting which was hardened by some unknown (to me) process and annealing the stock in this way always left it machinable.

Fusion 360 has a post for grbl. I've used cambam as well, taking care not to use things I know are not supported.

Re: Ghost Gunner
Gshield sits on an arduino flashed with GRBL. You talk to GRBL using a gcode sender over a usb link. There are quite a few gcode senders you can download. Everything is open source.

Re: Cloning hard drive
I had a number of requests from friends to replace their slow laptop drives with SSDs and the problem there is, of course, the same as yours. I used to use Acronis TrueImage for this purpose but have switched to a free product by Macrium called reflect. You can get it here: http://www.macrium.com/re...

Re: How Many Flutes for Wood?
I think as long as the cutter is large enough and spindle speeds appropriate, you can use 4 flute cutters successfully. With very small cutters, I use one or two flutes in wood and plastic.

Re: Anybody have experience with Autodesk's Fusion 360?
It's free now - you can sign up for a 1 year (renewable) "enthusiast" license. I've done a little with it the past couple of days and it looks good. I tried onshape but found that the network traffic was too much for my limited bandwidth. Fusion 360, while exhibiting some delays, is perfec...

Re: Free Canadian income tax software
Genutax is another Canadian Tax program that is free (payment is voluntary). I've used it for years and it works well. The rules do change every year - more so in an election year. No affiliation - just a satisfied customer, not of the government - just the tax software.

Re: Best Approach to Drilling and Tapping Cast Iron Lathe Be
I had exactly the same job to mount a t-slotted tooling plate on my lathe. I used a hand drill and block just as you are planning to do - and I drilled dry, but used tapping fluid for that portion of the job. Worked out well.

"Do I need to tell the software in my CAM where 0,0 is? Like the center of a hole, or a corner, etc..? If that is so, I need to figure out how to do that." Yes you do. All cam programs have a way to define the stock, to align the stock, and to align the part in the stock. I took a look at ...

Re: "Milling" Flat Sides on a Round Part in Alibre 2012?
I am using the current version of Alibre - now called geomagic design elements. I got the advanced import/export option originally but I think that feature is now standard. The easy way to find out is to download a free demo copy and have a look. You can do that here: https://www.alibre.com/download...
