Re: Allen models Fitchburg Northern build by first timer

For an "admitted procrastinator", you sure are getting a lot done. Looks great so far.

Re: Thinking of posting pictures?

If you want to add new messages to your topic, I think you have to use the reply feature just as you (probably) have been. But you can also add images to your existing messages. If you click a message's edit button (it looks like a little pencil), you should be able to add images to it in the same w...

Re: Mystery items

Yup, it's Goodell-Pratt. The 'G' is hidden in the photo. There's a copy of one of their old catalogs here: https://archive.org/details/GoodellPrattCatalogNo15/page/n281/mode/2up?q=132 Their No. 312 Slide Rest is on page 281. Not sure if the second item is shown in the catalog or not. I didn't want t...

Re: Basic Blasting Cabinet Set Up?

As long as we're straying off topic, here's the early 60s version of rmac with a still for purifying water to use in a Jensen steam engine model . Note the proprietary fitting between the condenser and the boiler. I'm pretty sure that was a piece of broom handle with a hole through the middle. I sti...

Re: Manson Hot Air Engine Build

For whatever reason, the alcohol wicked up the wire ... Well, not quite. As it turns out, the alcohol wasn't "wicking up the wire", it was being pushed up through the wire by pressure building inside the burner as everything heated up. I put a little vent hole in the lid and that solved the problem...

Re: Manson Hot Air Engine Build

Might be worth experimenting by just twisting together a bunch of wire to approximate the Kontax wick. Well, well. That worked too good. Way too good! I unraveled six or seven pieces of #12 stranded copper wire and then twisted them back into a 1/4" diameter cable that would fit into the alcohol bu...

Re: Manson Hot Air Engine Build

Thanks, pete. I tried some cotton rope also and it slowly gets charred and shorter about like the nylon stuff. Tim Coupland suggested trying the stainless steel wicks sold by Kontax Sterling Engines in the UK. I've ordered one to try, but it hasn't arrived yet and it's not clear how big it is. If it...

Re: Manson Hot Air Engine Build

All done at last. I'll try to post a video of it running if I can figure how to do that. Right now I'm using some 1/4" nylon rope for the wick in the little alcohol burner. It works okay most of the time, but sometimes the end melts and burns and leaves a gooey black blob that I have to cut off. I s...

If it's not too late, this video talks about a use for epoxy that's vaguely similar to what we've been talking about here.

I don't even know what a booster engine is, but it sure is interesting seeing how you're doing all this stuff.
