Shild, No matter which locomotive you choose, if this is your first project I'd recommend buying Kozo's book on the A-3.. There are very detailed sketches and photos of machining parts that will be very useful no matter what locomotive you choose.. He designed that locomotive for the first time buil...

Hi all, I was watching numerous videos of thermite welding rails together.. Once the stuff ignites, molten steel fills the gap between the two rails, and the excess flows off into a separate pan.. Why couldn't steel castings be made this way? Set up the crucible above the mold, and light it off?? Or...

How much of a gap are we talking about here? .005" or 1/8"? At what point would a gap be "too much" Didn't the prototype fire doors have small holes in them?

That looks difficult Marty, but probably not any more than anything else you guys do. Since the injectors are on the backhead for PRR locos, what's the check valve arrangement? I'm assuming there would be some, also somewhere around the backhead? In this case, the injectors are along the outside of...
