Re: Annoying Movie Welding
Anybody see "ALIENS"? They're making 6 ft vertical welds on some sort of space ship alloy using a cordless welder about the size of battery operated drill.

I'm trying to PM earlgo but the messages won't show up in my "SENT" list. I was browsing around in the PRIVATE MESSAGE section and found 2 of the PM's I sent in the "OUTBOX". What's the difference between "SENT" and "OUTBOX"?

Re: Shaft removal
There's no plate or access hole on the bottom? Usually you press bearing on or take them off by applying force to the inner race only so that there is no force on the bearing. The way this is described tapping the shaft in or using a sliding hammer to pull it out will apply the force to the inner ra...

Re: "Mounting a square piece between centers
I would center drill both ends of the shaft then dial it into to 4 jaw with 3" projecting out and the far end in a live center. Turn down what's exposed to 1/4" then project more out of the 4 jaw with the other end in the live center and turn again until you get where you're going.

Hey, I saw a sniper curve a bullet around a building by swinging the muzzle and hitting someone a mile away. That's Hollywood!

Re: plugging a barrel for bluing ....
I use only rust bluing. Plug the ends with dowels, coat the barrel with solution, let rust for 2 hours, boil in distilled water, card off. Repeat as necessary. I always do it 4 times but the 4th time is usually unnecessary as it gets fully dark after 3. I just like insurance. Change the water after ...

Re: Lathe setup question(s)
First you have to check the alignment of the headstock to the bed independent of the tailstock. This can be done with a ground rod in a collet or a test bar. I use an MT5 test bar the plugs right into the spindle bore with no other attachments or parts to degrade accuracy. Best $100.oo I ever spent....
