Same way you index a barrel. Divide the TPI into 1. Screw on the brake, measure how many degrees it needs to turn, say 20 degrees will line you up, and then if you are using 18 TPI, divide 18 into 1 = 0.055” per 360 degrees turn. Divide 0.055 by 360 gives inches per degree (this will be a real small...

What good is a shaper?
A guy down the road is selling this.. http://tumalo.org/catskin/shaper/16.jpg http://tumalo.org/catskin/shaper/95.jpg I think he's asking to much or I'd buy it just for the fun factor, but then maybe I'm missing something....? He's asking $850 with a some minor tooling. Oh, says it's a Lewis 7"

Well, what I ended up doing is, I made a mandrel and threaded it onto the bolt then I made a jig like G.Tannel uses on his actions to hold the mandrel, this let me indicate in both ends of the bolt better than placing it in a four jaw. The bolt was not perfectly round but X and Y on both ends are wi...

model 700 bolt.
I’ve see a couple ways to hold a bolt for cleaning it up, and I’m not real happy with any of them. So, what is the best way to hold the bolt for truing the nose to the center line, squaring the face and squaring up the lugs?

Re: Drilling a straight hole using the tailstock
Would it not be better to drill and ream the hole first, put it on a mandrel and then cut your taper?

Re: A short barrel spider
If I had a steady I would - I've been having trouble finding one, well I can get a new one for about $450 plus shipping but I was hoping to avoid that since it's only re chambering short (>18") barrels that I have a problem with.
Thanks,
Ken

Re: Don't forget you have to have a way to ...
Of course all indicating would have to be done on the chamber end with a pin and two indicators by adjusting the spider - perhaps using an o-ring like discribed by Bryants (I think), or just by using a collet as a pivot point. another way might be to sleeve the end of the barrel to extend it out the...

A short barrel spider
Has anyone made up a spider for chucking short barrels? I seems you could design one with some type of brass wedges in a sleeve to reach a long ways (10 – 12 inches?) into the spindle or 4 tapered screws pushing on brass pins perpendicular to the barrel also in a sleeve.
Any thoughts?
