Re: Oahu RRwy Passenger car build question

There is a terrific group of photos of one of the ex-D&RGW short cabooses with the side sheathing off. Even short cabooses were essentially truss structures. All the verticals were mortised and tenon joints with the side sills, just as your drawings show. The boxcars and stock cars all had rods pull...

Re: Valve for steam-operated drains?

Pardon my ignorance but I thought the push pull valves were for the injectors, which want a quick jolt of steam to get them started. The cylinder cocks should need nothing more complicated than a steam gate or globe valve, steam on or off. Quick opening or closing is not required, just properly seal...

Re: Glad-Hands

Tom,
Shapeways shows 1-3/4” scale. Is that what you are calling 1-1/2” scale above, or is it a different product?

Also, silly question. Are these cored or will they need to be drilled out?

Thanks!

Thanks for the kind words.

Wood is heavy! I was surprised how heavy my reefer turned out. But it tracks well!

Re: Temporary Trailer-Engine haul

I like the 1x2 furring strips as yes they do keep equipment from moving side to side, but just as important, the tires ride on the wood. The weight of the equipment is on the tire not the flange.

Just my two cents. Your mileage may vary.

Re: Pacific Fruit Express Reefers - 1.5" Scale

A plain side kit with no door openings would give folks a basic box car body. All you would need would be a door, which at that time were externally hung!

Re: Pacific Fruit Express Reefer Kits - 1½" & 1" Scale

Hi John, Kudos on a new product for the hobby. Just awesome! Also, thanks for documenting the assembly process. It really isn’t rocket science, but for many can be intimidating unless they’ve seen it done. Paint masks are the only way to go INHO for wood cars. As the car ages, so does the paint, inc...

Re: Your RR grading methods??

We use a mirror not only for final ballasting and
track set, but we also use the mirror after rough
grading and plate compacting.

It will give you a flat, level look you can’t achieve simply by eye.
