Re: DRO Backlash
The DROs on my machines allow selecting of the number of decimal places to display. If too many are chosen, the readings will be as described above by Bill S. I selected 4 decimal places and the readings progress by 0.0005" steps. That is the limit of the resolution with these machines. Multipl...

Beezow: Welcome. This sounds like your first large scale live steam locomotive project. Not knowing about your machining and modeling capabilities, I offer some suggestions. - Post your location by your name for readers to see, so that they can offer local resources to you. - Locate your nearest gro...

Re: Determining manual milling X axis feed ?
Switch to HSS end mills and carbide end mills.
With your smaller mill they should meet your needs without the hassle of inserts and flood coolant.
I have no need of CNC-style fast heavy material removal, and that's what I have done, with good success.

Re: pancakes
Operating logging steamers in the Pacific NW gave me opportunities to try boiler backhead cooking. Cooking in the oil-fired firebox was not an option. I can happily report that a 4 pound salmon foil wrapped with lemon and onion slices takes about 20 miles at slogging Mallet speeds! And the crew behi...
