I want to either soft solder or silver braze several lengths of halfround brass beading, 3/16 dia (3/32 height) onto the flat horizontal rim of a bronze cistern, the rim also being 3/16 wide. Would appreciate detailed suggestions as to how to do this, the more detailed the better. My inclination is ...

4-jaw for rotary table
RoTabChuck_a.JPG RoTabChuck_b.JPG RoTabChuck_c.JPG Picked up, for under a hundred, a nice Bison 4-jaw, minus backing plate, for mounting on my rotary table. The only mounting modification needed is extending the length of each of the 4 t-slots in the top of the RT table by about 1/4" to allow ...

terminology
It is useful to distinguish between "combination drills (center drills)" and center drills, at least for us fussy guys. A center drill, as I would personally prefer to use the term, is used for locating the axial starter point for subsequent drilling operations. It's the use which most of ...

Re: PUCK LIGHTS!
prlawwiii - I am sure that your LeeValley lights work well for you, but I would respectfully invoke, in my own individual case, the 10-foot pole rule. Magnetic gooseneck LED lights in my personal experience and observation are lame and cheap substitutes for the sort of lighting I want for serious ma...

more on toolpost wrenchery
Allied to the issue of lathe toolpost top-nut wrenches, dislcussed here a month or two back, are toolholder wrenches. My full array of toolholders, for an Aloris AXA, are fitted with height adjusting clamp nuts of 3 different A/F hex sizes (2 are imperial sizes, 1 metric). I welded together the appr...

Re: Best way to turn a 1/2" radius in a corner
Have you looked at round insert tooling? eBay lists very many round carbide cutters. The holders can get expensive, and you will want a lathe that has both the guts & rpm, but it's one potential alternative to the grind-your-own approach.

Re: Dome head hex bolts/capscrews
"They call them Acorn style I believe." In fastenings, the term "acorn" is almost invariably used with nuts, not bolts. In that application, there are widely varying dimensional ratios, with some being low-crown designs and others having elongated, pulled-out crowns. The height o...
