Re: Understanding BellPaire (sp?)
I believe that the stayed section of the boiler extends past the throat sheet to try and increase the amount of heating area. I believe this is a picture of what you're looking at.

Re: Free and easy to learn 3D CAD
All current Autodesk Products are free for students through their education program. Fusion 360 is indeed free for hobbyists (with the strings attached that say that you do not use their product for commercial use.)

Re: CAD system
After reading about the veterans version I got all excited, but if 3D models cannot be printed, well, that takes all the fun out of the program. Hopefully someone already has a copy of the veterans version and can fill us in on its capabilities. Donald If we are to believe the Solidworks' website, ...

Re: From photo to 3D printer?
I have some experience 3D printing locomotive parts and signs. Hopefully this can help illuminate the process that I use. In this little walkthrough I am preparing to print a Builder's Plate for SP Pacific 2479 1st step is to find a suitable reference, in this case I am taking a picture of a Baldwin...

Re: Marine Donkey Engines
Your photo appears to share a lot with a logging donkey. This type of engine was very common at one time and they were made by many companies. They were also used in mines and other hoisting applications. I would be surprised if there weren't more manufactures of steam donkeys at one time than ther...

Re: Balancing engine
I'm with Steamin10, I doubt that you can ever properly balance a single cylinder steam engine. Look for a certain speed and stick with it. If you would like to have a high speed engine try taking examples from existing steam locomotives, therefor avoiding mechanical vibration formulas. For instance ...

Re: Logging Demonstration
A good group to ask is the Roots of Motive Power in Willits California, they have several examples of full size Yarders and Donkeys that they have restored, and their Timberline quarterly magazine is full of West Coast lumbering practices, and tips for making your own. As for getting a scale yarder ...

Re: Drivers, Ductile or Gray Iron?
From a Mechanical Engineering standpoint there are a lot of equations that you can apply to get the proper press fit and find the required diametral interference for the materials that you specify. They are conveniently, or inconveniently if you don't actually want to use them, located on this webpa...

Re: Southern Pacific S-14 in 1.6"
Ken, The plan is to heat shrink tires onto the driver centers. The inside profile will be roughed out of a slice of steel tubing, which will be shrunk onto the driver centers. After the drivers are pressed onto the axles, the tread will be turned between centers with everything assembled to ensure ...

Re: 1/4th Scale 3D printed SP Pacific
Things are changing :) No kidding, there appears to be a growing culture of "bodging" the old technologies and the new ones. Casting the parts that have been cadded out would be a dream come true. Although I would like to make some of the patterns myself I know that the future of such cas...

Re: 1/4th Scale 3D printed SP Pacific
I think that looks outstanding, thanks for the update. You work with what you have. Personally, I think some of the surface texture adds to it, replicating some of the roughness of the full-size castings. I wish I could have one of those in 1/12 scale. The problem is the scale of the part, even the...

Re: Live steam and youth, February 2015
I guess by these standards I am a late comer into this marvelous hobby. I wish that I had more opportunity to run live steam locomotives, but the time and money required to are prohibitive to a humble college student like myself. But I'm glad that I'm not the only "youngster" interested. I...
