Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR
Hi Mike, simple, cheap but works for the snowplow why not. When at the R&GN I admired the trucks under the coaches for their simple approach but still look good. I assume the truck was not captured to the car bolster. Hi Jim... That's correct. The truck bolster 'pin' just plugs into the body bo...

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR
Thank You for the info. Visited the R&GN back in 2002. I like the simple pillow block style which might work in 2.5" scale. Jim Here's a 7-1/2"-gauge truck I knocked out for my snowplow. It uses the same principle, but it doesn't have any springs. I would use springs and more bracing ...

Re: 12” gauge DRGW Inspired RR
I am interested in some info on the Sandley trucks. Do the bolsters pivot on the ends or are they attached to the top spring plank. Thinking of building a set of these for passenger cars. Thanks Jim Hi Jim... The Sandley bolsters are round on the ends and pivot in the spring plank castings. The ori...

Re: Erskine Tramway
Hi folks... A couple weeks ago, I had a derailment while I was shoving some loads of wood up to the Car Shed. It turned out that some of the ties on the top curve had weather checked badly enough that they weren't holding the track screws anymore, and the rail had spread on the curve. So, I made a c...

Re: 7.5 gauge aluminum rail w/ accutie max weight per driver?
I know that 1" rail on 2x4 ties spaced 10" on center will support at least 350 pounds an axle. That's what the car of blocks weighs, I've no idea what the car of rock weighs.

Re: Where can I find plans for a speeder?
I'd like to build a small battery powered speeder. The type with two axles, that you sit on top of and go around the track. I see a ton of these out there does anybody have a good set of plans for one of them? Or know a website that has them on there? There was an article in Modeltec magazine, I wa...

Re: Sprocket question and others
Here's what I'm doing on my 'Listeresque' 4-wheel gas/mechanical. The wheels I got from 'Real Trains' years ago have a 1" bore and keyways. So, I'm using a section of 1" diameter keyway stock as the actual axle. To get the back-to-back correct, I've cut and squared off pieces of tubing in ...

Re: Cagney valve gear question
Glenn asked me about the Walschaerts Gear I designed for the 15"-gauge Pacific that we built at Sandley's in the late '70s. After I did the layout work on 'Mylar', our shop carpenter and I built a wooden mockup to '"prove" it. Here's a picture I took of the mockup. I understand it's o...

Re: Cagney valve gear question
Mike, that’s kind of what I thought. Sounds like it would be possible to fab all the parts from a drawing if need be. Next step, I guess is try to get someone at RMI to pick up the phone, and see what’s currently available. Hi Glenn... That would be a good idea. The only part that's anywhere diffic...

Re: Cagney valve gear question
Also not sure yet how much lengthwise modification might be needed to fit the overall RMI valve train to the Cagney space aft the smokebox. Glenn On the Walschaerts gear there are only two longitudinal rods between the eccentric crank on the main driver crank pin and the valve crosshead, the eccent...

Re: Cagney valve gear question
Glenn... Walschaerts is a fairly easy gear to design, usually easier than Stephenson, and it can be designed for either slide or piston valves. See if you can come across the Camden Miniature Steam Services reprint edition of "Locomotive Valves and Valve Gear" by Yoder and Wharen. The ISBN...

Re: Operating MARS Light
After the Frisco merger, we got some Frisco freight motors up in the PRB. They all had Gyralights, and when I'd get one, I used to run them and pretend I was on a passenger train. After a while, the Company cut the wires, so they didn't work anymore. Took my fun away.
