Re: 7 1/2 gauge 4" Hunslet build, Reeves castings

I'm not sure that you HAVE to modify the frames to get 7 1/2" gauge - I know I didn't. The tender is tight, but I took 1/16" off the inside of the axleboxes and that worked for me. The engine itself worked as-is (although full disclaimer - I'm at the rolling chassis stage, rather than the Fred stage...

Re: 7 1/2 gauge 4" Hunslet build, Reeves castings

I just checked on my set of plans and I went with the B frames - those are 6" by 1/4" strip.

When you're attaching the 1" angle to the top to carry the deck plate don't forget to leave 60 thou for it to sit flush. Don't ask why I know this :(

Re: HUNSLET QUARRY ENGINE BUILD

Hello all! I am new here but I just joined because I am considering purchasing the Reeves Hunslet set of drawings and package deal castings. I am looking for information from anyone who has possibly used their castings and also comments about the drawings. I have machine shop experience and own my ...

Re: Steel firebox forming

That forming jig is genius - and since I've got some 8" ID pipe, that would make a fine former to bend it over.

Thank you guys - I knew this was the place to ask :)

Steel firebox forming

OK, so I've been doing a bit of thinking and I think I'd better ask people that know :) So the Hunslet has a firebox made from 1/4" steel plate - and the boiler at the firebox end is formed into a nice arch shape - with about a 5" radius. How on earth do I make this? More to the point, how have you ...

Re: 1.5" piston ring

Since you're sorted out this is really just a shout out for Clupet - who I found were absolutely great to deal with if a little odd in this day and age (I phoned them up and said what I wanted, they sent them to me with an invoice, I paid them by return) Clupet Piston Ring & Gauge Co Factory B, Sol...

Re: Stainless steel boiler

Just so I'm clear what you're doing (I too brew, so I'm curious :)) - you're using this to step mash, right? For non-brewers, this is the process where the grain is heated to a very specific temperature in water (it looks a lot like oatmeal) and the steam (if I understand correctly) is being used to...

Re: Stainless steel boiler

Yep, this should run and run :) Just some random thoughts - If cleanliness and lack of contamination is a big issue, I'd be trying to remove the heating element outside the vessel. How much steam do you need? How many heating elements are you planning to use? How good are you at welding and working ...

Re: CAD files

The reply I got was similar to Fred's (although not to his quoted one :)): "Dear Sir Thank you for your email regarding our Hunslet drawings. On no account may these drawings be reproduced and/or distributed whether in the UK or elsewhere in the world. We DO NOT grant any permission to do so, whethe...

Re: CAD files

Thanks Fred - I asked Reeves as well.

By the by - the right hand side footplate on the drawing has the square hole for the reversing rod in the wrong place....as (of course) does my rather nice waterjet cut footplate now.
