In addition to locking the quill, I do not mill with the quill extended. I use the knee to set Z depth and use the quill only for drilling, boring, countersinking and such. Increases rigidity tremendously.

"Snug. Not too tight. Snug enough for the gauge to move under modest pressure----and firm enough to stay where it stops. Excessive tightness is no better than excessive looseness." No, if it's too tight, it'll be hard to pull though and might wear the guage faster, but the guage will still...

Telescoping guages.... Expand to slightly larger than diam to be measured. Put in the hole cocked at an angle and fairly tight on the lock screw. Lever the guage past square (it will retain the smallest measurement) and very carefully check with mic. Too much pressure on the mic and it'll read under...

Use a drawbar and set your cut up so the force pushes into the fixture instead of trying to pull it out. If it manages to pull it the slightest amount, you will get a bigger bite, so it will pull harder, so it takes a bigger bite, etc..... bang. If you are pushing and it slips, the cut is reduced. Y...

Nice mill, Gerald! 75-4200rpm.... great speed range. Only issue with this, like the mills we have at work, is their inexplicable aversion to put iron in the table. The tables on these mills are not as heavily built as the rest of the machine. Just be careful not to leave the table hanging off the kn...

I certainly agree on the collets themselves, but I'm talking about the whole closer setup... nose adapter, thread protector, drawbar. http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-5C-COLLET-CLOSER-SET-FOR-SOUTH-BEND-HEAVY-10-LATHE_W0QQitemZ150212125723QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item150212125723&_trkparms=72%3A635%7C39%3A1%7...

Correct Bill. The 13 is the same spindle taper and internal diam as the heavy 10 (10L and such). I believe Jeff Beck (tools4cheap on Ebay) sells a 5C collet setup for about $200, I intend to snag one of those very soon. Gotta put a new roof on the house first.

Everything is relative... compared to your mini-lathe, I am sure the SB13 seems huge. It is, in fact, a good medium to small lathe. 1/8" threading will be a bit tedious, especially without a collet setup to hold such a small part. The chucks for this size lathe may not close down enough to grab...

I had an 8" Union on the SB10L at the museum, worked great. I only have a 6" for the new home 10L, but that's fine with me. I have a 12" on the big L&S, so anything of any size gets put in there, anyway. If the SB was my only lathe, I'd probably have an 8". One minor advantag...

Not sure what the hp of that mill is, but chances are you will have a hard time pushing any depth of cut with a 1" or larger milling cutter. If you are looking to get a good finish for slotting, pocketing and such, you will do best with mills ground for the specific material you are working wit...

"If thats the case, then the same will happen with the 1/3 HP motors that everyone I know who owns this lathe, recomends." Correct you are, sir. That is why I suggested a motor of half that power. Your experience as a mechnical designer will in no way help you with the fine sense of feel r...
