Re: 'soft' silver solder...

The silver bearing solder you want is 95% tin, 5% silver. The hardware store stuff is 95% tin, 5% bismuth, or something like that, and is crap to use. The commercial names are Harris Sta-Bright, All State 430. Especially for brass or sstl, the liquid acid flux sold with those should be used. That a...

Re: MEG Wendy suspension

It does help to understand the potential problems and reasonable ways to approach changes. I am going to use 3-point with some springing on the front, but the rubber is giving me concerns on the rear. They don't quite get there on that thread. Thanks Ben.... been watching your thread... ready to bui...

MEG Wendy suspension

A question for any of those who have worked on the Wendy suspension, or any of the Hackworth Gear types I guess. The plans call for .250 x 2" neoprene everywhere neporene is indicated. Any neoprene I can find is very very soft. So, I found hockey pucks to cut up. Is that too stiff? Considering the s...

Re: Propane oriface size

The Marty burners that I'm playing with use a #71 which is what the instructions call for. He goes on to say .....as close to .026 as possible. Now, he is working with 1 psi and up to 5 psi. One nozzle. The two that I have made so far appear way too rich, but I suspect that is poor machining and the...

Re: MEG Wendy on Coal

Got it! Makes sence to me now. Scratching my head to think up a third/center row of burners. Need an octagonal manifold pipe? I still am partial to the simplicity of the slotted burner, anxious to see your design. Do you (or Jim S) know, was the original MEG burner inadquate or somehow problematic? ...

Re: MEG Wendy on Coal

I've got to stare at your pics for a bit to digest it all... great photos by the way! Thx I can't quite see your vertical arc in the last photo... yet. Are you talking about the end plate that is bolted to the front of the grates? Do you suppose that the lower tubes could actually be sucking cold ai...

Re: MEG Wendy on Coal

Now that is very interesting, the better burning in the front. Antisipating having a problem, we were contemplating a pair of air tubes routed upwards to the front of the firebox. In a inverted "V" up through the boiler shell, through the water and dumping at or near the end of the grate, with a dif...

Re: MEG Wendy on Coal

I had a friend with a Meg with marine boiler. It steamed well but he did have to rake out the ashes often due to the shallow ashpan. Oh yeah.... no ash pan. I just went back and glanced over the plans again. It appears that the cockpit floor has a sloped chute in the center where one would rake the...

MEG Wendy on Coal

I've got the frame done, drivers, "J" boxes, axles & cylinders. And now begining work on the gizmos inside the frame, and the valve gear. Thinking ahead a little, I have the boiler pipe cut and in hand along with the firebox. Being a Marine type boiler, the firebox is simply a smaller dia pipe insid...
