Re: Dum switch to motor (HELP)

Connecting your motor as shown in the attached diagrams will operate the motor in forward, and reverse. There is a discrepancy about the 230 volt connection related to the higher potential to ground, and the winding still being hot with the 230-volt arrangement despite the motor being shut off with ...

Re: Is the live steam hobby in decline?

This topic raises [its] discussion every once in the while. It usually happens in the dead of winter. The quick, short answer to the question is No. The hobby is not in decline. It's evolving. One could scour the Internet, tabulate all known tracks, websites devoted to the hobby, and contact all act...

Over 900 pictures of a Baldwin S12 are here: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/locoList.aspx?mid=344

Quite a few different photo angles can be found to fill in additional or missing engine details.

Re: Bent spindle on my DELTA DP220

In addition to the tip already suggested, Scroll to page 316 (13-3) of the PDF here: http://www.woodworkslibrary.com/repository/machinery_repairman.pdf It’s a Navy Publication that can provide additional ideas. Unfortunately the document doesn’t cover “spot heating” which can also straighten shafts....

Re: Bearing Fits?

Harper, Your choice of the k5 tolerance fit is a good one. It’s the same tolerance listed in the earlier posted chart. Exceeding the maximum shaft diameter of 1.1573 inches as shown in the chart will result in “over kill” for the fit. A 6208 bearing is considered a “light service” bearing as it is. ...

Re: 40th anniversary of the blizzard of ’78

Harold, after I posted the question it did occur to me that it was somewhat a region specific topic. (The storm taking place in the Midwest, to Eastern half of the United States in this instance.) I suppose the question tests memory which some people have, and others have no recollection. And of cou...

40th anniversary of the blizzard of ’78

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the blizzard of ’78. I was a Marine Guard stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland and remember NSA’s parking lot had this incredibly massive pile of snow built up from trying to keep the very large parking area cleared. Letters and calls from back home in Michigan ta...

Re: Surveying techniques?

Forum conversations sure take on a life of their own. It went from surveying to, “who and what… to… I can pull…” I’m chuckling at John Brock’s comment at the very beginning of this thread about making a career out of [this]. Sound wisdom as always from Mike and his Erskine Tramway. (Awesome Railroad...

Re: Bearing Fits?

Agree with Bill. Welcome to the world of Bearing Fits! Bearing fit charts have grown exceedingly complicated and difficult to navigate on-line. The older SKF Bearing Installation Guides and the even older New Departure bearing guide books were/are much easier to read and decipher. It helps to locate...

Re: What is "Live Steam"?

This is a great question to ask. Pinning down a definitive specific answer as to what “Live Steam” means or represents today is a challenge because it’s meaning has indeed shifted. Everyone will have their own interpretation of the term based on their own level of participation and passion on the su...

Re: Car stability paper

Decisions made by those shaping this hobby before us have dictated what we have today. Historically, car stability in building miniature railroad equipment was an afterthought. As Bill Donavan writes in his IBLS article mentioned earlier by pat1027 and oilcan, park trains designed with the goal of g...

1950-1952 Locomotive Cyclopedia

“Locomotive Cyclopedia” has had its own thread here on the board at one time from December of 2014, but I’m not able to find the actual discussion when scrolling back through the messages to bump the thread. Anyway… The 1950-1952 Locomotive Cyclopedia published by Simmons-Boardman is on the Internet...
