More than likely the steel tire would split before the spokes crack or break if the shrink fit was overly tight. Iron stands up to very heavy compression as cast iron bridges in England have stood the test of time. Heavier is better than skimpy as things tend to loosen if not compressed sufficiently.

Can't say I agree that castings come out of the mold rough. Depends on how well the pattern is made and how the mold is rammed and poured. Something is wrong if your castings are not coming out nice. Don't believe me then take a quick peek at any old caboose stove. I'm sure that with modern technics...

We too use soft copper gaskets on certain flange types of high vacuum. Vacuum only has to seal up to atmosphere which is 15psi / 760tor. That being said soft copper works exceptionally for steam sealing although the seal surfaces should be narrow if possible like plumbing seats against the bib washe...
