Re: Don't want that taper
if I were going to turn a very precise 0.7200 shaft from 1018, I prefer to start with 7/8" stock rather than 3/4". I'll explain why later. And with your HSS tool, I would hone a narrow vertical flat, about 0.010 wide on the points edge. Make sure the tool is not set above center axis of wo...

Re: Don't want that taper
when you check for taper, in addition to using the dial indicator to test that carriage travels parallel to a chucked precision test bar, check along the top of the bar - if your tool is rising or falling in relation to the work piece axis, it will turn a taper. (an unworn auto engine's wrist pin wo...

Re: Filleting on a Lathe
alternatively, one can use a stubby 2 flute ball nose endmill for a form tool with the desired radius clamped in a boring tool holder. As Harold suggests with a hand ground form tool, keep over-hand as short as possible. This works best when turning plastics, such as Delrin, aluminum, brass, and eas...

Re: Questions to ask a CNC shop
contrary to Harold's respected opinion, I know of many small CNC Job shops that take great pride in turning out quality parts, including my own CNC shop. I specialize in prototyping and small batch parts. When I get approached by a potential customer I like to know what the part fits and is required...

Re: Portable Boring Head
I own four 4 Kwik-Way boring bars (made by CEDAR RAPIDS ENGINEERING COMPANY) which are similar to your Storm. We use them daily to bore engine blocks, and other part. I think Goodson still offers tool bits and tool holders for the NS model. www.goodson.com › Short Block Rebuilding › Boring Bar Tools...

Re: Tool Post Turret
if your small parts are relatively short, consider setting up "gang tooling" on your cross slide. Its fast and rigid. We do this often. For turning we use relatively large diameter but stubby boring bars ( or rigidity; they're easy to mach) If we need to turn a lot off, to make a "ste...

Re: Increasing the diameter of a hole
we frequently repair the pins & bushings for backhoes, utility booms, etc. For those with lager pins, we use a special boring machine that bolts to the side of the boom, has 3-fingers to center it, and bores both bushings at one go, so they're aligned. for smaller "arms" we either alig...

Re: bushing clearance
I have successfully used "single leg" telescopic gages to measure cyl sleeves, ranging from 1" to 4.125", for over 40 yrs. I find them fast and easy to use, yielding very accurate results. Like Harold mentioned, feeling /finding center is key. My technique is simple, close & ...

maybe take a count of all the main bearing rollers? ... or it could be a rod bearing roller ( although, those were 0.1875+ dia. IIRC) if all are present, it's possibly one left in the cam chest from an earlier failure/repair? or maybe a lifter roller axle from a prior failure? respects. Tom - AMSMot...

Re: Basic question on mill part setup - part origin
I own two CNC production machine shops. We do a lot of 3, 4 & 5 axis milling. Where the part origin(s) is/are doesn't make us any difference, because normally the raw stock is extra big with plenty room for the finished part. In our world, a little extra mat'l is cheaper than set up time and wit...
