Re: If you need a good laugh...
I did not miss the point. This post was not meant to ask for advice, or in-person help, or help finding in-person help. It was a funny picture of what happens when ambition outpaces your tools' capabilities. I know the correct way to do this job: hand it over to someone with real machinery. I have n...

Re: If you need a good laugh...
Steve: This will be a new quill for my hot rod drill press/fake mill designed around larger bearings (and a new spindle). When it's done if I get more than 2 tenths runout between the OD and the bearing bores I will be a little disappointed in myself, even though that's completely silly given the ot...

Re: If you need a good laugh...
HA! Well, as dangerous as it was I managed to square up both ends and drill one center hole. Low speed, very sharp HSS, and yes I know it would have been like a medium-size bomb going off if something had gone wrong. The piece is just over 8" long now, but the part hidden inside it is only 5.75...

If you need a good laugh...
I need to poke a 1" hole through this massive piece of 4140HT ('4142', whatever). It's not gonna happen, is it?

Re: Digital calipers
The very persuasive arguments here have changed my mind. After all, if you go grinding on or modifying the Harbor Freight $10 calipers, you will void the warranty and then not be able to get them replaced if something goes wrong. But seriously. You guys don't know how to fix things? You don't like t...

Re: Caliper for Marking
If you get HF flyer emails, you can just show them the email on your phone to use the coupon, no hard copy required. They are pretty rough out of the box but polish up nice. Diamond needle files to knock off the corners, 400 grit paper to blend, 1/2x1/2x4 India stone to finish. 68304_01.jpg 68304_02...

Re: Digital calipers
They make $150 calipers because, apparently, there are lots of people out there who want to buy them. I know, I don't understand those people either.

Re: Caliper for Marking
I totally understand fetish objects. Those greenish-silver face Brown & Sharpe DTIs tickle me in my special place and I buy them whenever the price is right even though I don't need another one. I got a Fowler large dial 0-4-0 DTI in a small lot from ebay, opened it up, and promptly dropped in t...

Re: Caliper for Marking
HF has 5 or 6 different SKUs for what appear to be only two models. I don't know why they do that. Anyway, the one that does only inch/metric is the stupid one that loses zero every time. The one that does inch/fractional/metric is the one you want (#62569, #68304). It only resets zero if you pull t...

Re: Caliper for Marking
$10 Harbor Freight calipers are just as accurate & repeatable as any other 6" digital caliper at any price, and, you can abuse them and not feel guilty about it. Sharpen the tips and scribe your layout lines; dull them, sharpen again. Work them over with a stone to smooth out the sharp edge...

Or do what I did, adblock any URL that contains the string 'photobucket'. Youtube is next for that same treatment, if they don't change something or if there isn't a FF extension soon that brings back some version that will actually play a video in my browser. Since their latest 'redesign' all I get...
