Re: Making ladder rungs and grabs for a boxcar

I think I had to re-upload the video, I cannot remember why it got lost. Brakeman7.5 has posted the correct link.

Re: Train brakes for the little Mogul

The reason the engine will skid on a hill is because the train weight is more than the engine itself, it is the train pushing the engine. Running light it will stop without problems and the brakes are working as designed. Just like the prototype on many roads, the Soo Line and the L&N, these Mog...

Re: Train brakes for the little Mogul

The brake rigging on this little Mogul already has equalization in them, the original builder must have done this. They are very efficient but train brakes are still needed because the drivers on the engine will slide on a grade trying to slow or stop a train.

Re: Train brakes for the little Mogul

Yes, I agree. I did not actually build this tank I bought it from a vendor. Other forms of plastic such as CPVC is better but the metal ones are far superior now that I have learned. If we ever have to change it I will use metal. However, if sunlight UV rays do not get to this PVC tank, it will last...

Re: 1921 Haskell & Barker Soo Line 36' stock car

I finished my 1.6 scale model of a Soo Line Haskell & Barker 1921 stock car today. I am very pleased with the results and you will notice that I weather my cars some. I also put chalk marks on where switchmen marked the cars for which track they wanted the car sent to as well as my own graffiti...

Re: 1921 Haskell & Barker Soo Line 36' stock car

Ladders and Grabs are finally installed. The most tedious of jobs is production work. It took me a fair bit of time to make a jig to drill the grabs, and of course, the ends are shorter in length than the sides according to the drawings. It works out to be 3/8" shorter than the rungs on the si...

Re: 1921 Haskell & Barker Soo Line 36' stock car

I finished mounting the doors and I finished the roof today. It is board on board except I did not attempt to do the prototype roofing with a layer of decking, then tar paper, and another layer of decking covering the joints of the boards below. The door latching devices took most of the day, and e...

Re: 1921 Haskell & Barker Soo Line 36' stock car

I started fitting the side doors to the car. I am not trying to replicate the track rollers, but just so the doors can be opened these will suffice. My nephew made the KB brake cylinder for me out of aluminum. It does not have all the details that one 3d printed would have, but this works just fine...

1921 Haskell & Barker Soo Line 36' stock car

For those who might be interested, I am building a 1.6 scale model of the 1921 Haskell & Barker Soo Line sawtooth stock car. I am intrigued with the sawtooth design cars that I remember on the Soo Line in my growing up years in the 1940s and 50s. I have a set of original drawings from H&B a...

Re: Making ladder rungs and grabs for a boxcar

Here is a photo of the finished car after I weathered it.

My nephew has a machine shop in Minnesota and he made the KB Triple brake cylinder for me. It is just an aluminum turning but it does help the underframe some.

Re: Kempin Ballast Hopper

I finished my Kempin ballast hopper today. It is not a model of a prototype car but I looks like it might have been. My version of 1954 graffiti with chalk. Switchmen would use chalk to designate track numbers and as a kid, I just had to do the KILLROY pickies, except I made mine KILL RAY WUZ HERE....
