Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
On Kozo's 1.5" A3 there is about .343 spacing in the legs, the 1" scale super simplex has 3/8" spacing, the 1" scale puffin billy looks like it has 1/2" but also has a much wider fire box (if that makes a difference?). I had drawn mine with 3/8 up by the flues but tapered to...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
Hear is the latest layout for the boiler that I have come up with. I lowered the top of the crown sheet to just 1/8" over the center line of the boiler and reshaped things so as to make staying simpler. It now would use 4 3/4" copper tubes and 5 5/8" copper tubes. Two of the 3/4"...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
Hear is a example of a mixer blade that was plasma cut for us by the same suppler and machine that would be doing my stuff. I measured all 3 holes in 4 places each with calipers and they were all within .005 of round and each other. So as long as I have them leave a little material for me to finish ...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
It took two weeks but my 36" long 6" SA106 B pipe has been ordered and is on its way. Wound up costing me $140 total including shipping, not sure if thats a good deal or not but its what i need. When I was paying for the pipe I got talking to our in house sales rep and he was telling me th...

Re: Why 0.5-Liter Cylinders Will Soon Dominate Automotive-Engine
I have been a big fan of .5L of less per cylinder all aluminum V motors for years. I was one of the early people to start doing performance builds and swaps using the Toyoda 4L 1UZ-FE V8. I have a 1uz swapped into my 1987 supra mated to the stock Supra R154 5 speed transmission and fitted with a twi...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
I had thought about using 1/2 copper tubes at the very beginning but I have read in several places how the slight loss of efficiency with the larger tube size is a fair trade off for the great increase in reliability. For instance in Kozo's A3 book his 3/4" scale A3 uses 3 .787" OD, .693&q...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
I have a pic of a tube layout of 4 on top 5 in the middle and 3 on the bottom. With the OD of 5/8 K copper tubes being .750" there would be .3" between the tubes on the top row, .0625" between the tubes on the middle row and .125" between the tubes on the bottom row, I think that...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
I have been working on the design for the boiler and was looking to see what everyone thought. I have a steel supply company quoting me a piece of 6" SA106 B schedule 40 pipe and as a back up they are also quoting a piece of 6" SA53 B schedule 40 pipe, schedule 40 has a wall thickness of ....

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
It did come with a set of plans for the H.J. Coventry 1" scale B&O D30 which are in no way similar to this locomotive but still cool to have for reference and future use. I have been useing these prints, the prints for Kozo's A3 and pics of the allen models mogul as guides but have not foun...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
I have also been going through the chassis cleaning, replacing incorrect hardware, reworking rough and unfinished parts and relubing everything. I am not finished with it yet but please point out any other improvements you would make as I may have missed some things.

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
Hear is the steel smoke box, boiler pipe and fire box that came with this deal. The smoke box should be ok after a little reworking but the fire box and boiler pipe are questionable. I am probably going to do as several people have recommended and make a whole new boiler that is shorter so that the ...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
Hear are the pics I took of the copper boiler internals that came with this locomotive. I am not planning on using any of these pieces as they seem to be questionable in both material quality and fitment. It looks like the person who was building this boiler was using copper for the front and rear f...
