Re: Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

Here are my versions of the clamps I'm using to hold the globe castings from PM Research. The ones for the lathe were from a designe in "Live Steam Magazine" some time ago. The rectangular block on the mill is the one I prefer, the top face and the side face can be cut in one 90° pass. Cen...

Re: Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

Thank you RRTy and milwiron for your answer to my plumbing question. I think my choice will be
to go with threaded copper tube, since I already have the taps and dies for the 1/8," 3/16," and
1/4." tubing.

Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

I'm new to plumbing. What is the advantage of using a threaded brass tube, over a silver soldered copper tube?. Either one will be inserted into a bronze PM Research, fitting. I'm using 3/16" and 1/8" globe valves. 3/16"OD. refrigeration copper tubing wall thickness is .030 / 3/16&quo...

Re: Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

I have completed the burner plate and dam (damn) section. Bill Harris, definitively had a sense of humor, when he designed this combination of 45 hole rings (2) and a dam plate that requires a circumferential gap of .015 (no explanation of how to do this) the dam is floating on a liquid of molten si...

Re: Upside down images

I too am posting from a Windows 10. The pictures showing the angles for mounting the boiler, are showing in a horizontal position. They were taken with a Nikon Coolpix camera, with the photos taken with the camera in the vertical position. Pictures in the folder show vertical, post shows horizontal....

Re: Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

These angles will support the boiler, by the support rods, (after they are welded) . Copper rivets are not set.

Re: Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

A few more boiler parts. The copper tube lengths aren't sized yet. Have to make a tool to flare the ends when the boiler tubes have been welded. The copper tubes did not fit in the 5/8"holes, seems they were over-size by a couple of thousandths (metric sizing)? brought to a sliding fit by using...

Boiler tubes are DOM steel, purchased in Texas, as a cut-offs, from oil rig piping.

Re: Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

Sweet! Looks great. I've got the Live Steam build series from the 1980's and always thought it would be a fun first locomotive for me to build. How are you finding the build difficulty up to now? The part that gave me the (how do I secure ?) this boiler tube in the lathe chuck, without it creeping ...

Mich-Cal 1.5 Shay.

Been "lurking" sites for shays, I started building Bill Harris Mich-Cal #2 some time ago. The members of this site appear to have more interest in shays
than some of the others I've been on. Well here goes, this is where I'm at.

Asian mill head alignment.

Aligning head with the table, using a pencil lazer. Simple clamp attaches lazer to mill head, target plate screwed to mill base. Cap on lazer and target plate have a #51 hole drilled to reduce size of beam. Base plate mounting holes larger than screws, allows alignment of plate to beam. DSCN0340.JPG...
