Re: Stolen train alert
Very cool the cops helped load up the stuff tho, rather than just dismissively point over their shoulder and say, "It's over there."

Re: Steam chest material
Salt air is rather unlikely to be a problem here in the desert where I live.
What do you use to oil down your loco at the end of the day, Bill? Undiluted soluble oil? Or steam oil?

Re: Steam chest material
Makes good sense and I figured there must be a reason in the material choice.
Thank you

Steam chest material
This may be a dumb question, but why do kits include a casting for steam chests? It seems that's a simple part which could be made more cheaply with bar stock. Does it need to be made of cast iron or bronze for wear purposes or something along those lines?

Re: One 0-4-0 KIT LEFT***SOLD***
I should have mentioned I plan on using the same cylinders and valve gear for the 4-4-0 so I'll do them all at the same time. For the 4-4-0s it is just a matter of the frames lead truck (which I already have) and boiler same tender trucks with slightly different tender. Are you planning a similar 4...

Re: Another New Guy wants a 10-wheeler
That Allen Models Fitchburg Northern may just be the way to go after all... Or some imaginary locomotive using that running gear anyway. I found this picture on the Attzberger site tho, it's nearly EXACTLY what I want: http://tacllc.biz/rgs20_es.jpg But looking at the photos, that locomotive RGS 20 ...

Re: Just picked this mogul project up off of DLS
If I were paying for it, and a CNC plasma cut left any slag I couldn't rub off with a small chisel, I'd demand the material be re-cut. Properly set up plasma cuts are super clean. It's not like he's asking for anything difficult or excessively thick, and his money's as good as anyone else's. Now if ...

Re: shop built dividing head help
I'll be following this thread with interest! I have the Gingery book. I picked it up years ago, saw the worm and gear he spec'd in it cost more than a Shars dividing head (at the time, anyway. I haven't looked lately) then kind of forgot about it on the shelf! Looking forward to seeing your prototype!

Re: Another New Guy wants a 10-wheeler
Thanks for the warm welcome, gents. Amazing what you can learn just by saying hello around here. For instance, I didn't even know of the existence Atzberger RGS #20, but that locomotive is very much what I had in mind looks-wise. 2-1/2" scale tho.... Wow that thing is monster big. A number of y...

Re: Turning the Scarlet Harlot into the Green Goddess
Can you please give me more details about this locomotive... Stuff like what plans it is based on, what the driver diameters are, and such? I'm new to the board and very new to live steam, but that locomotive is very like what I would like to build myself. I actually LIKE the red paint and balloon s...
