Re: Clutch / Shear pin for Smithy Midas ?

On a related note, The first time my table went beyond it's limits using the lathe with the power feed, it snapped the spline shaft. The table is marked 5-1/2" in each direction from the center and it snapped the shaft at under 5" in one direction. (The other direction goes over 6" f...

Re: Clutch / Shear pin for Smithy Midas ?

I put shear pins on after a couple of, um, learning opportunities. I replaced the pin for the feed screw with a brass dowel and I made brass keys for the change gears. I also learned not to crash, so I really haven't tested them thoroughly. But they haven't caused me any problems. Have the shear pi...

Re: Clutch / Shear pin for Smithy Midas ?

I thought about making some brass pins since the clutch seems way too complex on the cross feed. I hear everyone on the "crash less" idea, and I do now but the last one was a bigy and ripped out a fixed shaft in the gear box and it happened in a split second after a tool just dug in unexpe...

Clutch / Shear pin for Smithy Midas ?

So I've had a few unfortunate crashes (both the headstock and a dig in) on my Midas 1220 LTD. Was toying with the idea of trying to build a clutch or at the very least put shear pin(s) in on the feed shaft vs the solid ones in there now so I'm doing a little less swearing and replacing gears. Has an...

Re: .22LR Suppressor build

I'm getting ready to build a can for my 6.5 Grendel, and 6mm Creedmore. Thought I'd post it here and get you guys opinion. Its my first form 1 build, and I really don't want to screw it up. Both barrels are 26 inches, so it will never see muzzle pressure over 4800psi. What you think? https://goo.gl/...

Re: Threading logic check

So an update on this if anyone is following. I created an aluminum (figured it was cheaper than messing up in stainless) plug to check fit. Fit like a glove once I deburred it. Then moved onto stainless. First one went fine, thread was beautiful, and had a pitch diameter within the range. Second one...

Re: Sharp V threads

The very first thing I noticed was I had much much much better chip control . The next thing I learned that really surprised me was instead of the usual 5-6 spring cuts I normally took I only needed two . And visually the threads look better at the bottom with a flat instead of the sharp groove . I...

Re: Threading logic check

More often than not I end up with a maintenance task of a female thread and a male part that has either gone missing or crumbled beyond measuring so those tips are great. Working back from the Minimum diameter makes sense to me, but I seldom get it right the first time so I'm trying to get better a...

Re: Threading logic check

When looking up editions of the Machinery's Handbook I cam across this PDF link https://github.com/aokholm/process-cap-master/blob/master/PCDBmasterBibliography/Machinery's%20Handbook%20Guide%20-%2028th%20Edition%20(Malestrom).pdf I really need something printed but could be handy for a quick lookup...

Re: Threading logic check

As dbstoo suggested, you can make determinations that may be helpful. Often a thread is a common size, and is easily identified. A couple observations, such as the minor diameter and pitch can be quite useful. And, in regards to size, if you're going to single point the thread, there's nothing wron...

Re: Threading logic check

Typically, you have two choices. 1) make a mold of the cavity using something like cerrosafe (low melt temperature meta) and use that to determine the major and minor as well as to verify the thread form. 2) Assume that the crest of the internal thread is the minor diameter and reverse engineer the...

Re: Threading logic check

So what is the correct procedure you should follow if you are presented with the problem of a threaded female part of unknown or unsure size, that you need to make a mated part for ? I realize this is more in the maintenance area vs, new manufacture but would be handy to know for future reference.
