Re: Attachment for turning a large radius convex surface

Wes, glad to inspire. My belt sander has continued to be improved. A platen
allows grinding flat surfaces and a knife grinding attachment is used to hollow
grind the blade. As you folks know, a shop to work metal is invaluable. Rod

Re: Attachment for turning a large radius convex surface

It seems you folks like to over complicate things<g>. My
video showing an attachment made for crowning a pulley
for a belt sander on YouTube might be helpful for some of
you fine fellows.

Several years ago I needed crowned pulleys for a belt sander build. You may find
my YouTube video interesting, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vXLXDj-L8aw .

Re: Source for Reasonably Priced Ballscrew?

To wind up with about 20" of travel, you will need a 600mm machined end ballscrew. The machined ends and ballnut take up about 4", leaving you with about 19.5" of travel. Both ends are machined to 10mm. One end of the ballscrew is threaded. BK12 and BF12 end supports support the balls...

Re: need cutting oil suggestions

Harold, you make a good point. I get the same reaction with a tingle on my tongue with prolonged exposure to photopolymer resin, a material I've worked with for over 30 years. I usually wear nitrile gloves with that resin. Wearing slippery oil covered gloves around the lathe and mill, scare me. This...

need cutting oil suggestions

For the past 15 years or so I've been using Cool Tool cutting and tapping fluid. Lately I've
noticed a sensation on the end of my tongue after a couple hours of exposure to this
stuff. Have any of you folks had similar issues and what cutting oil did you change to?
Thanks for any help. Rod

Re: Metal Spinning

My YouTube video should give you some ideas. Copper work hardens while being worked and will need to be annealed a couple times during the spinning operation. Metal spinning is near instant gratification because once the mandrel is made, making each part only takes a few minutes. https://www.youtube...

Work holder

A guy never seems to have enough arms, hands & fingers to hold and position items for welding and other operations in the shop. While this is not my original idea, my approach is a cheap and simple solution. The holders are ½” pipe nipples and fittings attached to a brake disc. This gives me ele...

Re: Can Fix-It Shops Turn a Profit in 2014?

Basically it's a good idea. If your personality can tolerate deadlines and people trying to chisel your price down, go for it.This is the kind of stuff I get talked into doing for my family and neighbors. I insist they forget where they got it made/fixed/modified, so every Tom, Dick and Harry doesn'...

Re: identifying the right gear hob cutter

What you are likely asking for is an involute cutter. Normally 12 teeth is about the minimum limit of teeth because the involute tooth form tends to undercut with less teeth. A set of 8 involute cutters is needed to cut gears from 135 teeth to 12. A number 8 involute cutter cuts 12 - 13 teeth, numbe...
