Re: What Makes a Machinist's Vise a Machinist's Vise?
I'll have to disagree on using an anvil surface as the differentiation. If you go here, https://www.mile-x.com/vises/ you will see a few different brands and including the Wilton machinist vise with an anvil surface. There is no set definition of the difference between the two but to me it seems tha...

Re: Grease Gun v. New and Improved Grease Gun
A couple of thoughts on grease guns. You have the pistol grip handle, the old style lever pump and the new battery powered. You also have rigid pipe or flexible hose 'tween the gun and the coupler. Each has it's place. My brother used to call the lever style with a hose a " three handed grease ...

Re: Annoying Movie Welding
I kinda thing that the Hollywood set is primarily concerned with separating you from your money. They have no interest in training you how to weld, or any concern that .05% of their viewing audience find technical fault with their process.

Re: 23 Degrees: Cold Enough to Freeze Hose Bibbs?
We have for years ran the water in the barns and outer areas. Where you only have a few days of freezing a decade flowing water is the easiest fix. Be creative and mist the hose end into the air and wake up to ice sculptures.

Re: To Goat or not to Goat?
My wife has had a small heard of sheep for many years. A couple of years ago she decided goats would be nice also. They are the bane of my existence. As said they respect no fence, they climb, and they don't taste good. A sheep is as good a brush hog as a goat. Goat feed will kill a sheep. Both will...

Re: individual drill bit
Kinda goes along with my saying, "I can't afford cheap tools.". Going with a name brand from a good tool supplier is best in my book. I go with MSC.mcostello wrote:Cheap drill bits may be one of the most expensive tools You might ever buy, next to cheap taps. .

Re: Drilling to depth?
Another possibility is to bring the quill to the stop, raise the table to give zero clearance between the part and the drill bit, then put a spacer equal to the hole depth under the part to be drilled. Or a combination of the above and a spacer for the deeper holes.

Re: Thread ending positon
To do this with precision you can figure the the cut to make. If you have a 32 pitch thread divide 1/32 and this will give you the the movement one turn will give you. 1/32=.03125.. if you divide this by 360 degrees you will have distance per degree. .03125/360= .00009 in/degree. Once you get how ma...

Re: Drilling to depth?
I am preparing to build a Von Broklin pump and it involves drilling a LOT of #50 holes to specific depths, more accurate than I trust the built-in depth stop for. Is there and easy way to know the depth accurately (without installing a DRO) or is using a collar on the bit the best way? What machine...

Re: Finally Got to Shoot on my Own Land
We have land rented to a Christmas tree farmer. He was asking me who was shooting into the trees? No one that I knew but he did explain that lead can kill a tree and to put the word out not to be shooting trees. So take care in shooting into the woods.
