Re: Kozo Hiraoka K-27 engine
You might be a redneck.....err steam engineer if you ..... :D Was there an overriding reason why they went from Stephenson to walschaerts or was it simply from a maintanence standpoint? If you had ever crouched down in an ash pit and had them run a steam locomotive over you so you could oil the valv...

Re: Durango and silver ton train trip advice
Everyone else pretty much gave the when/where/why/etc. about D&S & C&T. I've done 3 photo charters on the D&S and 1 on C&T. Fall colors are the best on both in late Sept/early Oct. Of the 2, C&T is a more authentic experience in terms of stuff to see/feel/smell/etc. Though IM...

Re: Allen Mogul 1-piece frame available anywhere ?
I know this subject has made the rounds a few times. Is anyone laser/flame-cutting/water jetting Allen Mogul frames ? Have the casting set with the bar stock to build the frame. After reading advice here, seems a 1-piece frame with keepers is the way to go ?? Mike You can purchase them right from A...

Re: Lathe Flange tool
Indeed she does. Hopefully she'll chime in heregcarsen wrote:In my honest opinion, a sherline lathe would not be rigid enough to use the form tools in, But I may be very wrong as I have never operated a sherline lathe!!. Hudson Huney would be more knowledgeable on this matter as she works for sherline?

Re: Lathe Flange tool
Being some what of a machinist noob, I'd like to get started on at least the tender trucks for my Allen Mogul. Starting small with Sherline mill & lathe. The tender/pilot wheels are 3-3/4" diameter (IIRC), and the stock Sherline lathe will only turn 3.1" dia. If I get the riser blocks ...
