Lube or Not? Water As a Lubricant
Right. Wateror condensate is not a good lubricant for metal on metal sliding surfaces. Oil, even in small amounts, of almost any kind is better than water. Water on the highway is an entirely different matter. A very light rain plus the residual oil on the highway reduce stopping distance. A thick f...

Re: Practical Physics etc.
At expense of being repetitious see prior post regarding "Scientific American", Amatuer Scientist" CD and C. L. Strong's "Procedures in Experimental Physics" Both of these items provide parctial information on an extensive list of projects. Physicists as a group are inclined...

Re: Need a recommendation for a physics book ...
For practical matters in the realm of physics try to get a look at or buy a copy of C. L. Strong's "Procedures in Experimental Physics." It has all kinds of methods and procedures. For interesting projects get the CD of the old "Scientific American Magazine" column "The Amat...

A Wankel Steam Engine. No Side Rods! No Cranks!
How about that. A Wankel two stage engine. Delivers continuous torque.

Just the thing to take the fascination out of the locomotive with no more linkages, cranks and side rods. Not a breeze to machine and get to operate though.

Patrik:
I'm sure you had a memorable trip.
In 1958 I had the privelidge of riding one the last steam powered cog rail road in Switzerland (and Europe) on it's next to the last round trip of the season. It was also the end of steam operation as it was to be replaced in 1959.

Single Cylinder Linear Engine
I recently saw a demonstration of a power tool operated by a single stroke single cylinder linear 'engine' operating on refined hydrocarbon fuel and a battery. This engine does not incorporate a flywheel as would normally be expected. This was the reslt of the designer/inventor ' thinking outside th...
