Re: Steam in London: help me prioritize

My daughter just got back 2 weeks ago from a fortnight in the UK with her husband. Both are experienced steam locomotive engineers/firemen here in Canada & the US, so they spent a day on the Great Central Rwy with a 2-6-0 and six coaches. They made 2 round trips of the mainline (18 miles each way?),...

Re: Interlocking tower

In 2009 I visited the Culp's Deep Run Central Railway during the Spring Meet with two friends. This private track in the woods of eastern Pennsylvania had many super scale features but one, in particular, had a surprise. An interlocking tower stood beside the tracks at one end of the yard just past ...

85th Anniversary Meet at Montreal - Reminder

We hope to see many of our live steam brothers at our annual meet to celebrate with us, 85 years as a club. We existed before that for a few years as part of the Montreal Model Engineering Society. The live steam fellows set out on their own as the boat enthusiasts had Beaver Lake and the ponds in L...

Re: Question about a DLS ad

Montreal has not had 5" gauge track for the last 15 years or so. The elevated tracks are 3-1/2" and 4-3/4" gauge, ground track is 7-1/4".

Engineers are welcome to ride as they see fit for their own comfort and ease of firing.

Re: Women in the hobby?

My grandmother, Myrtle Leggett, ran 3/4" steam on the highline in her backyard beginning back in the late 1920s as did her daughter Willa Leggett (Ratcliffe). My mother, Joyce Leggett (Turnbull) ran steam 3/4' steam in the 1940s and helped her father Jim Turnbull build locos by turning up small scre...

Re: UP 4-8-4 By Daniel Boone, Sold At Barrett-Jackson

I think at one time someone was trying to sell it for $1,200,000 ... to which I said "If that sells, my 4-8-4 is for sale the next day at $1,000,000". I figure I could hire the best machinist/modeler in the world to build me a highly detailed replacement 4-8-4 and have lots of money left over! :-) ...

UP 4-8-4 By Daniel Boone, Sold At Barrett-Jackson

One of the engines built by Daniel Boone was sold at auction. Ouuuffff… that paint job! Does anyone know what gauge this is?

Re: Night Running & Lights?

One aspect of locomotive illumination that has not yet been discussed in this thread is the hazard for oncoming traffic from trains with overly bright headlights. It should be considered that your megawatt lighting blinds others causing an annoyance at least and a danger at worst for the other engin...

Re: Cleaning a smoke box?

Has anyone found a solvent or cleaner that will wash away steam cylinder oil & coal ash? I am trying to clean up my engine for winter I found what works best is to not stop running for the winter. Just put on some longjohns and keep on steaming. If we can do it in Montreal, you folks in Winnipeg sh...
