Re: Mid South meet

the meet was really small this year but we all had a good time. several posters from this group were there. attached is our buddy Jesse running in the crisp morning air. what a great shot. Patrik, I machined my first Stuart-Turner V-10 about 30 years ago and followed that one with a #9 mill engine. Neither of these casting sets had hard spots nor did I have any carbide tooling, used HHS for everthing. Sometimes the extreme outer surface of cast iron may have hard places caused by sand...

Boiler for Cli-Shay

Back up there a ways, mention was made of the advisibility of building a fire tube boiler for the Cli-Shay and I personally think that would be a big advantage in runnability and steaming. The Bill Conner design of boiler as used on his Beam Locomotives is water leg fire tube design and is a proven ...

Corliss

Here is a beautimus Corliss that was built by Keith Spriggs of Cherokee, Kansas a couple of years ago. Before you downrate his workmanship, let me say that this is only the SECOND live steam model Keith has built. Check out the platform at the top of the stairs. It is composed of scale thickness iro...

On three of my locos, I use straight steam from the brake valve (homemade) to the brake cylinders. The cylinders have a very small hole at their lowest point that keeps water from filling the cylinder or lines.. This has worked very well for me and as Bill Shields has pointed out, your engine is not...

steam gauges

All of my pressure gauges are connected to the turret/manifold, (also called a "steam stand" back in the late 1800s). I have a 1/8" pipe nipple from top of boiler to turret and have never had any problems with gauge not reading almost the same all of the time. I am sure it drops a wee...

wrenches

wagginspack, I made my own 1-1/2" scale 18" Rigid pattern pipe wrench and have used it on all five of my locomotives. Trainman is right, the real stuff had pipe wrench marks on the fittings. With our small brass pipe, we do not have to tighten enough most of the time to cause serious wrenc...

FWIW: All of my boilers have try cocks on the backheads or in the case of vertical boilers, in the side of the shell. Well, that is incorrect, the "Newbie" boiler does not have try cocks, I forgot about that one. Yes, I do use them from time to time so I know they work. In the case ...

Steam transport

One could always build a steam powered tricycle like the one I saw photos of on ebay a while back. According to the builder/owner it runs for free if you have a plentiful supply of dried horse muffins for fuel. One could of course use coal or propane, but the muffins can usually be found for just th...

Dick, at the time the 173 was alive and working on the CP, I would imagine there were plenty of engineers that looked dusty like Jed especially at the end of the shift, but you need a Jethro on the other side with a coal scoop in his hand.

Ronald, can you maybe not take one of these super hero types and trim away their cape or other useless appurtances and then do a creative bit of painting to get him into overalls or coveralls. Whittle out a railroady looking cap to put on his noggin and your nice looking turntable shack will have it...
