MT3 Dead Center

Haven't been here for a while, Hope all and everyone is well. I have a Morse taper 3 dead center with a damaged point. Does anyone know of a service that can regrind it? OR: What would I need to adapt it to the spindle of a South Bend 13? I have a 5C collet adapter but never had a way to use the dea...

Re: 1911 front strap machine checkering?

Here is a brief video of the machine process: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8XBCVfa91-E The fixtures and tooling are too big of an investment to do one or two pistols. Even the specialty files to do it by hand are kind of not worth it. Unless someone wants to do it for the personal satisfaction of...

1911 front strap machine checkering?

Anyone here have experience with machine (mill) checkering the front strap on a 1911 frame? I'm not looking to invest in the specialized fixtures just entertaining the idea of doing two of my own frames, both aluminum. It may not be worth it don't know. On one of the guns I'm almost better off selli...

Re: Mitutoyo 6" digital caliper

I'm on my second 500-196-30. First one lasted 2-3 years then went berserk. Long Island Indicator said they can't be fixed or won't fix them. Bought them both from McMaster-Carr. Don't know why the first one died it was never abused or dropped. Hope the new one lasts longer. You get spoiled with thes...

Re: Sharpening slotting bit

Looking at the link;, MetalMan built a #10 and I was describing a #3. Looking at the side view of a #3 , you can see the slight taper of the slotting faces. I needed to actually see how they did that. There is .007" taper over .425" length of one side. Not much but required. That at least...

Re: Sharpening slotting bit

Thanks Steve. What Frank did to concave his broach is pretty much what I was thinking. But in reality hand grinding and going one corner at a time would likely work OK. I wouldn't mind having one of those rotary broach systems but it seems the good ready made ones a expensive and I don't have justif...

Re: Sharpening slotting bit

The bit in the holder is HSS, I don't think my HHS drills would work. The length is the tool material as I bought it, yes too long. I need about 1" sticking out of the holder on the finished tool, In the photo it's sticking out 1.75". Russ, are you saying I'll need some relief ground in ab...

Sharpening slotting bit

I have a project that requires me to broach round holes to square in some bronze door hardware. The plan is to use the Bridgeport slotting unit. I have no tooling for it never used it. So after some google searching I ordered some 3/16 high speed steel and made a tool holder from some 1144. Looks li...

Thought the motor went in the lathe

Went to use the lathe Monday and it wouldn't start, just hummed. Odd it was working fine Saturday. It's three phase and I thought the motor was shot, original 1948 far as I know. Too busy with other things to deal with it my neighbor called to ask if I had 220, he didn't. I did have 220 single phase...

Re: Panhead rebuild project...

I see it the same as you. I'm sure I could do the motor work if I wanted "BUT" don't have the special tools and fixtures, it would take a lot longer and there would be the risk of making a rookie mistake. I've heard good about Truett and Osborn Cycle.
