Re: Dead 3/4 hp motor - starter capacitor?
The wiring was wonky - fixed it and it started right up so cap is fine as well. Now I've got to work on the coolant pump, sigh ... At least I can cut what I need with a spray bottle of coolant if I get desperate.

Re: Dead 3/4 hp motor - starter capacitor?
Thank you both. I found an article on how to test the capacitor so that's my next step. I think after that is checking that one wire to the cap does indeed have power.

Dead 3/4 hp motor - starter capacitor?
I've had a 13" Jet Horizontal band saw for years - bought second hand from a guy who definitely did stuff to the wiring. However it has worked for me for years until today when it is totally dead. The motor is a 4 pole, 3/4 hp. There is power to the box that has wires split off to the motor swi...

Scrap - Bronze, Zinc, copper - Free (+ shipping cost)
20190418_113652.jpg 20190418_113700.jpg I am discarding scrap metals I hoarded for casting. They are free if you can pick up (I live near San Rafael, CA) or you can pay me for shipping. I have 40 pounds of mostly bronze (see photos), copper, zinc, and brass. Most of it is the bronze and copper with...

Re: Sort of free bronze, zinc, and brass scrap
Wow, a induction furnace, that's impressive. You can make some nice alloys. I have a lot more brass, zinc than I thought. It is in a 5 gal bucket, maybe 3 gallons worth. Guessing it is close to 40 pounds. I could fill up a large fixed rate and you'd get whatever fits if you want a sample large enoug...

Sort of free bronze, zinc, and brass scrap
I have some scrap metals to give away but I'd like to get the shipping costs. Bronze 3.5 pound bronze valve - a new Hansgrohe pressure and temperature shower rough in valve I've been unable to sell to plumbers. If you need one to use you are in luck - these run over $200. As scrap it has a little bi...

Re: Pump problem on horizontal band saw
A BIG thank you to all - the pump (and saw) is back in action. Now I can get back to planning the cuts. Apart from the engineering and the manufacturing processes to make the rotor this turned out to be a very simple machine. There was nothing fancy. The water goes in the center hole, the plastic va...

Re: Pump problem on horizontal band saw
I took the bottom of the pump off to see if the rotor turned (it did) and anything was clogged. The picture shows it upside down with the cover removed. You probably know how it works - the coolant enters through a hole in the center of the cover (Right arrow) and the rotors push it up through the t...

Re: Pump problem on horizontal band saw
Attached are three pics. The first one ('Saw') is a pic of the saw (a bit out of focus) where the yellow arrow points to a red toggle that controls the coolant flow. It is in the off position. Saw.jpg The next one shows the other side of the saw and the coolant bucket - i removed the stainless mesh....

Pump problem on horizontal band saw
I have an old Jet 7 x 13 horizontal band saw, bought used years ago, that has been a great boon to my work. When I bought it the 'coolant tank' was a plastic bucket with a pump in it and some stainless mesh duct taped over the top of bucket as a strainer. Recently a friend was using it and accidentl...

Re: How should I cut this?
In my relatively limited experience with RT work you need at least 3 clamps, 4 are preferred. Given that you are milling almost a complete circle you will have to reposition clamps. I try to have 4 so three of them can remain clamped while I move the 4th. You might be able to have one on the L side ...
